tummy time??

my doctor said that we need to give lo tummy time to strengthen his neck and back. however lo hates it!!! he starts screaming bloody murder after only a couple minutes and turns red. i just can't leave him there screaming and red so i pick him up and it usually takes him a couple minutes to then calm down and not be red. anyone else's doctor told them they need tummy time and if so are you having this issue??

Re: tummy time??

  • do you have a play mat or where do you do it?  If he hates it, i'd move him.  Maybe try it on a regular blankie or even on you, if you're laying down.  Just lay him flat on your chest so he's comfortable, but can still excercise his neck.

  • my LO used to also hate tummy time and my pedi told me to give it o him a couple of times a day. The pedi told me that if he absoultely hated it that I could do tummy time on my chest. To lat on the couch and let LO lay on my chest, and that would work just as well. LO is now 7 weeks and he still doesnt love tumy time on a mat but he will do it for a couple of min before crying. :) Hope this helps

This my lol hated it at first so I would put her on her tummy on the boppy or a pillow now she likes it more.

  • We tried from 3 weeks and she hated every second of it. Turns out, she has major acid reflux problems. Just a thought...

  • I think it's pretty common for a lot of babies to cry after a few minutes. I do tummy time on my chest a lot, but DS is getting better about doing tummy time on his own. It will take time for them to get used to it. Just imagine how tiring that is for them, I think I would get frustrated too.

  • My ped told me to give my DD tummy time too but that was after I asked a question concerning her not getting a flat spot onthe back of her head.  There are several things that I have done to get my DD to like it more b/c she really does not either but my ped told me as long as she was getting 3 to 5 minutes a few times a day on her tummy that was good.  I have layed her down on the floor with a receiving blanket rolled up to prop her up under her chest and I put her arms/elbows up on the blanket to teach her to hold herself up.  I have put her up on a boppy and layed a colorful book or toy that she likes in her line of sight and I have layed her on her playmat which has a tiny mirror on it and she will look at herself and be content longer.  You can try any of those and see if they work and just change it out until you can put your LO down for tummy time without any help.

  • DS has been rolling since 3 1/2 weeks, and just will not do tummy time.

When our pedi asked about it, I told him this and that we focus on other ways to get him exercise - sitting him up on our knee, tummy time on my chest, etc. and his response was "that's fine, really it's just "Not back of the head time" we're looking for."

    So don't stress about it.
