Talk to be about getting your masters

It's now been 11 years since i graduated college. I will need a master if I ever want to move up and it's always been a personal goal. The program I am interested in is available at UT and also online through UofH. 1st choice in UT but I don't know if I can get in.

When getting into a masters program what do they look at for admissions? Test scores? College GPA?  Where do I even start??

Re: Talk to be about getting your masters

  • I got my masters at UT.  You should be able to read up on what your program of choice considers.  Mine said that while you needed a minimum score on the exam to get in that they highly rely on your admission essay, resume and references.  Also - it was nice to know that only certain schools don't even look at the essay portion of the EXAM.  (For mine I had to take the GRE).  It also helped me to look at what my program's average GRE score was and what UT's average GRE score was to cool some of my anxiety after I got my test score.  Also I should note that my particular master's degree is known for not really depending on the numbers part and more about the person.  It's run by hippies. =)  What are you going to school for?

  • Higher Ed. Administration.
  • I am a graduate coordinator at UT and I can tell you in the department I work for the top things are GRE, GPA, good letters of rec (hopefully academic in nature), and does your personal statement line up with the university and departments goals.

When a department says the minimum to get in is X, bump that up because while they will take someone with say the minimum GRE score it is usually only because they are stellar in some other area(s).  It is important to know who the professors are and the type of research they are doing and making it sound like your goals line up with them.  It's important to make that clear when writing your statement of interest.

    Hope that helps.

  • If you're looking at UofH Law School my best friend is the Assistant Dean of Admissions there.

  • That's crazy!  I'm in the Higher Ed Admin program at UT.  Obviously only part time since I work at UT full time and have a kiddo.  Holler if you want to talk specifics about that program.

Does UT offer tuition discounts or anything? I work at A C C and I can take classes here for free but that doesn't help me when I need a masters. I've considered looking for jobs at a 4 year university so that I can take advatage of the discounted tuition but I'm scared with the economy right now. A C C isn't looking at any layoffs so I'm secure in my job but many other institutions aren't as fortunate. I will definitely have questions once I really start reading up on the program. Gotta take the GRE first. I'm also worried about my GPA in Undergrad (3.0). Hopefully I can get good GRE scores, get good recommendations and a good statement they won't look at my GPA. I'll also be going part time since I work full time and have kiddos. My boss has already told me to get my masters if I want to replace her when she retires.
  • Hmm...I wonder if we know each other IRL?  I worked at ACC for years before working at UT.  I've also worked at Texas State.  At any rate, I do get tuition assistance that amounts to tuition only for one course a semester.  I still have to pay fees and taxes on it which is about $300+ per course so it's not entirely free.

I also started an online masters program while working at ACC and I just didn't like it.  You know when wanting to go into higher ed there are just a lot of things that don't transfer well online (in my humble opinion).  That is why I made the move to work at UT so I could help fund my education.  I do miss ACC but there is a lot to love about UT.  While I feel confident that I will not be let go I do know many people that aren't as fortunate.  Although I can't imagine the positions they are posting now wouldn't be posted unless they had a good feeling that they would be able to keep the person.  If you want to talk more here is my personal email:  belly_shelley AT hotmail DOT com
