When do they start to "hold on" when being carried?

Weird question, but when do babies start to "hold on" when being carried on your hip? When I carry them on my hip, they don't fully wrap their legs around me or grab on, and still feel a bit like they are flopping around, particularly when we're going downstairs. I feel like other babies I've held would do this, but maybe they were much older. Carrying DS is like carrying a sack of potatos.

They still aren't sitting on their own, but spend lots of time on their tummy, so they have strong backs. They're much more interested in learning to crawl and be mobile than figuring out the balance to sit alone.

  • Mine started doing that recently - like in the last few weeks...Harry also has a bad case of stranger danger so he holds on really well!

Now the issue is them being squirmy.  They twist and swat at everything!  They want to be anywhere except being held by you.  It's so sad.

  • Mine don't hold on at all. It is almost like they are trying to jump out of my arms. I have no idea why they won't hold on. My niece is 6 days younger and seems to hold on for dear life when she is being carried and has always been that way. It does make me nervous when I'm carrying them down the stairs together. Like PP said, it is like they want to be anywhere but in your arms.

  • This makes me feel better. Mine like to arch backwards and look up, so going down the stairs they are leaning back the whole time. I usually end up having to cradle DS b/c he just won't stay upright and he slides right through my arms.
  • Neither of mine really "hold on".  E twists around everytime I try to carry him, so I end up carrying him facing outward.  Z will sit on my hip, but he doesn't really hold on unless I try to put him down.
