What to do when someone's pet dies?

So, we have this wonderful nanny.  And she's young (well, younger than us), and she's in grad school, and just got her first pet last year (a cat).  And the cat got run over and died last night.  She is of course upset, and I feel awful for her.  Is there anything y'all can recommend to do when someone's pet dies?  I haven't had a pet since I was 13, so not much experience here.

  • They make loss of a pet sympathy cards.  That would be a kind gesture and even that is probably more than she'll expect.  I don't know how much you want to spend but if you want to do more, then some flowers would be nice.  I'm in the camp that treats the pet as family so when mine go, I know I'll be torn to pieces.

  • When a good friend's dog died, I got her a personalized frame from Danielson Designs. It had a paw print on it and her dog's name.

I recently had to put my 7-year-old cat to sleep because of his heart disease.... looking at his picture makes me smile.

  • Usually, I'll make a donation to the humane society or a rescue group in the pet's name. A friend did it for us and I was very touched.
  • Thanks ya'll.  Those are very thoughtful ideas!

  • My Aunt's dog of 12years just died over the weekend.  I'm going to get her a card.  Not sure where to find loss of pet cards, but I'm going to start searching.  I'm also hoping to find some type of special picture frame for her to put their favorite picture of him in.  Maybe a nice family photo!  :]
