What did you use instead of a bassinet?

I think I am going to skip buying a traditional bassinet because we are hoping to use something like the PnP as our bassinet until we transition to the crib. Do we need to buy anything extra for it if we we plan to use it for the first few months of sleeping? Any suggestions on which PnP or other alternative to use? What did you use if you did not use a traditional bassinet? I just figure then we have the PnP to use on trips, around house or at the grandparents house after we are done using it, one less thing to buy!

  • We used the arms reach co-sleeper.

  • We're using the crib.  LO will go in that from Day 1 in her room.  No sense in spending money on somthing that will only be used for a short time or having to change routines for LO at some point down the road.

We will have a PnP in our den for naps, changing diapers, etc but in terms of nighttime sleeping, it's crib only for us.

  • We needed a PNP for travel anyway so I got one with a bassinet.  Don't confuse that with the newborn napper thing though, which I think is completely pointless.  DS slept in the PNP bassinet in our room for the first 4.5 months and it worked out really well.  I EBF and it was so nice to have DS close by for all the nighttime feedings.  Having LO in the same room is also supposed to reduce the risk of SIDS.  We didn't have any problems transitioning to the crib later.

We have the Graco Silhouette PNP and I love it.  The raised changer is easier on your back and it's very sturdy, no problems with tipping.  I was also able to fit the bassinet part in the storage bag even though it doesn't say so on the instructions, which was nice for travel.

  • PnP. The basic one without the napper/changer. Just the raised mattress. It was invaluable. LO slept in it for the first 4 months (until he reached the weight limit). It's still in our room, and he sleeps on the bottom now some nights, in addition to his crib and sometimes he sleeps in our bed. I also use it to "contain" him for a few minutes when I need to run to the bathroom since he's mobile now. I love it.

  • We're using this portable crib from Graco.  Davy loves it.  It's basically a pack in play with three sleeping heights.  The bassinet and standard pack n play level plus one in between those two heights.  i.e. a level for newborns, a level for sitters, and a level for babys that can pull up.

  • PnP w/ bassinet - DD HATED sleeping it it.  We put her in her crib at 4 weeks.  Wish we had done it from day 1.

  • We used a pnp w/newborn napper for the first few months then transitioned him to the bassinet part of the pnp. If I could do it again, I'd consider an arms reach co-sleeper which can also be packed up to travel.

  • We had a traditional bassinet but DD wouldn't sleep in it... So she slept the 1st 3 weeks in her little lamb swing in our room, then she went to her crib with the angelcare monitor =)

This. DS hated his bassinet and the PnP is downstairs. Its been a lifesaver.

  • We put DS in the crib as soon as we were home from the hospital. We swaddled him and he did fine. I have a full size bed in his room and slept in there with him the first 3 weeks (So DH could sleep-I EBF so having him be awake was pointless). We occasionally put him in the PnP when we had overnight guests, but we realized it was easier putting guests in our room and we slept in DS's.

I didn't like the lack of support the PnP mattress/bassinet had as opposed to the crib mattress. I was paranoid about flat spots on his head, so I never bought a rock n play or any of those things. He does nap in his swing though. And we have the PnP for trips to grandparent's etc., I do recommend you get one if you will travel with LO.

We used our Chicco Lullaby pnp for the first three or so months downstairs in our house.  I had a c/s, so I slept in the recliner.  My husband would stay downstairs in 6 hour "shifts" once I was able to sleep in the bed.

We used an additional mattress in the PnP mattress with  a hard back.  Sheets & sheet savers are amazing.  I can't count the number of times I've used the Pnp, not including going to my mom's house (she has one, too).

I love the Chicco one (my mom has the Graco one.  It's okay).  The mattress is comfortable, it folds up really nicely, and has a nice music/ light/ vibration feature that Bean loves still.

We kept the pnp downstairs until he was about 8 months old, and used it as the center of our "downstairs nursery zone."  We had changer covers, diapers, wipes, extra onesies, extra swaddling blankets, and a little dirty clothes basket.
