Thrush?

I think my baby has thrush. He has a big white patch on his tongue and a little patch inside his cheek.  I don't know what other signs I should look for in him or me?  Help!   Is there anything I can do at home?  or do I have to go to the doctor?  If I have to go to the Doctor which doctor do I go to (his, mine...or both?) TIA

Re: Thrush?

  • Hello,

It sounds like thrush. Other symptoms can include tiny bumps/spots on their skin and really bad/red bumpy diaper rash, especially if the thrush is systemic. You may also be experiencing sore nipples, shooting pains or burning sensations in your breasts.

You need to see both HIS and YOUR Dr. and be treated at the same time. Otherwise, you will pass it back and forth. You could try using genetian violet ( I think that is what it is) and take probiotics. Also, cutting sugar out of your diet will help keep it from reoccurring. you can find alot of good information about thrush (treatment, symptoms, etc.) at kellymom.com

We just got over a bout of it. Her pedi gave her Nistatin liquid for her mouth and the same thing in a cream for her butt. I was told to put the cream on my nipples, but that didn't do anything as it had spread to my ducts (I think). I ended up calling my Dr. and getting a prescription for Diflucan.I had to wash anything that had touched my breasts/nipples in hot water with bleach. I also had to boil DD's pacifiers and anything else that touched her mouth. If you cloth diaper, you will need to boil those, too.I have heard that it can keep coming back.

    Good luck.

All of this. If you don't have pain/itching yet then you might not have it yet. Make sure LO gets treated ASAP so that it might not even spread to you. But you need to see your doctor (OB is fine) as well because it is likely it will get passed to you. In the meantime, take probiotic, eat yogurt, and wash AND DRY up after nursing. You MIGHT not get it from LO if you're vigilant. Usually LO isn't bothered by the infection but you will be.

Seriously be aggressive with it. My thrush lasted 2 months and it seems like that is not so uncommon these days.
