Dr. Brown Bottles and mixing formula?

How do you mix the water and the powder formula? I thought you just shake it up, but now I have heard you need to stir it with a spoon? Does it matter?

Thanks

Re: Dr. Brown Bottles and mixing formula?

  • Im not sure if it "matters" which way you do it b/c I don't FF, but what is your question about it being related to Dr Browns?

*Shaking creates bubbles, that may be the reason for mixing.

  • I know nothing about the Dr. Brown Bottles - but we use other bottles and we always just shake them.

BTW - Dr. Brown makes a formula pitcher to "mix" in and put in the fridge.  We don't use it, but I remember others talking about it, and I've seen it at BRU.

  • You're not supposed to shake it when mixing because formula could clump in the tube.

I kept the caps from all of the BM storage bottles and just screw the cap on after adding formula, shake, then pop in the tube, stopper, and nipple. Why buy a whole pitcher when I make bottles as I need them? Seems redundant.

Or, mix in a different bottle with a cap on and pour into the Dr. Brown's bottle.

  • Like PP said, you don't want to shake the bottle becuase the formula powder might get stuck in the tube.

We made all the bottles for the day at once.  I just mixed the water and the powdered formula in a pyrex measuring cup with a spout.  I used a wisk to mix becuase we had to use a gentle formula and I found it clumped up more than regular formula.  I would actually pour each bottle then too, and took them out of the fridge and warmed as we needed them.

On the occasion that I would make an individual bottle, I would measure out the water/formula, put the travel disk in, put the collar/nipple on, and the cover on and shake it up with a towel covering the bottle.  Even with the travel disk, the bottle still leaked when I shook it.

  • I loved the formula mixing pitcher.  It was a bit pricey, but use a 20% off coupon at BRU for it.  Plus, the bubbles would all settle, or you could drop a touch of mylicon in the pitcher and mix that in, instead of dosing every bottle.  For a reflux baby, that was a MAJOR upside.

If I was in a pinch, I would swirl the water and powder first, then tip the bottle on an angle.  Put the tube on an angle to match, lining up the angle cut bottom with the side of the bottle, so it blocked the opening, then slid it to the bottom and straightened everything out, capped it back, and shook it.

  • I laughed when my husband brought home the Dr. Brown's pitcher.  I have to admit, we love it now.  Super easy to mix up the day's worth of formula and pour as needed. It really does cut down on the bubbles.   If I have to mix a bottle on the go, I think using a fork works better than using a spoon.

  • We swore by the Dr. Brown's mixing pitcher with DS. We used it every night to make the bottles for the next day. If we were out, we just poured in the powder to a bottle filled with water and before putting all the parts back in, we used one of the "storage caps" and swirled it around. Then we'd take off the storage cap and put all the pieces back in the bottle so DS could drink out of it.

  • We found Dr. Brown's shaker caps, so we use those to make DD's bottles.  We fill them with water, scoop in the formula, cap them and shake.  After letting them settle for a few minutes, we replace the shaker cap with the tube, nipple, etc. for her to drink.  We sent some shaker caps to daycare too, and she uses them during the day.  It is great to help prevent clumping or formula getting stuck in the tubes.

  • The formula pitcher was a life-saver for me! I love it, still use it too. It was very convenient to mix up a pitcher once a day and then not have to worry when DD is starving and you have to waste time mixing it up then. Now that she's not drinking as much formula it wouldn't be as big of a deal, but is still use it.
