1st Trimester

Ultrasound question/poll!

So I had my first US this past monday because I was having some spotting. I was supposed to be around 5-6 weeks (depending on when exactly I O'd).  Well they did an abdominal u/s instead of tv.  All we could see was an empty sac that measured 4w4d (next to impossible from when I got my first BFP).  She said it wasn't necessary to do a tv u/s. Everyone I have talked to about it said they should have done a tv instead of abdominal.

SO my question/poll is this:  For you ladies that have had your first u/s, did they do abdominal or transvaginal?  I'm just wondering if I need to request a tv the next time I have one to be sure I am getting the best view possible.  TIA!

  • In both of my previous pregnancies and the current one I have had all tv.  That early it is very hard to see anything with an abdominal, but my first with this one was at 6 weeks and we saw the sac and a flickering heartbeat of 111. The second time at 6w4d, we could even hear it.

I would definitely ask for a tv next time.

  • With DD I was 13 weeks at our first u/s so the dr. did an abdominal. This one we did a transvaginal because I was only 8 weeks.

  • My BFPB had an abdominal done at 8W4D and they measured her at 5W5D. SHe proceeded to tell the doctor that it was impossible because her BFP was at LEAST that long ago and they hadnt had sex since the day she'd ovulated. She showed him her charts and everything, but alas, he just ordered betas and didnt really do much else. OF COURSE she was freakingout thinking shed had a missed m/c. After a day of deliberation she went to the ER and had a transvaginal u/s done and the baby was happy, healthy, and had a strong heart beat. And measured at EXACTLY 8W 5D.

Moral of the story: Abdominal U/S SUCK until you get further along. You need to demand a t/v u/s for accuracy. In fact, I believe they are supposed to do both if not, then at least the t/v.

    I hope this helps!

  • I'd get a new doctor if I were you. abdominal u/s isn't even an option for me until 11 weeks when they can actually see something that way.

  • I had a tv at 6w2d and saw the heartbeat.  The baby is so tiny at that point, I think it would be impossible to see with an abdominal us.

  • Thanks ladies!  It makes me feel much better to know that maybe the only reason they didn't see anything was because of the abdominal u/s.  I thought it was strange that the tech didn't seem interested in doing a tv.  It was the end of the day and I was a fit-in, so maybe she was just in a bad mood or something.  I didn't even mention it to the midwife that talked to me about the u/s afterward.  I will definitely demand a tv next time I go!  Thanks again!

  • I had an u/s at 6 weeks with DD and it was tv. I had one at 9 weeks with this LO and it was also tv. She tried abdominal first, but I wasn't told to have a full bladder beforehand, so it was hard to see anything.

  • I had an abdominal at 9 weeks and we were able to see the baby clearly and the heartbeat.  I don't know about before that though because that was my first u/s.

  • With DS, we never had a t/v ultrasound. We got the blood test done around 5 or 6 weeks and then we had our first appt at 10 weeks, and we got to hear the heartbeat. We didnt see DS until we were 19 weeks along.

  • Hi! i am an u/s tech. where i work, we always do tv up to about 11 weeks. its pretty much pointless to do an abd that early. we cant even see the embryo over the abd until atleast 7 weeks!
  • We didn't have an ultrasound with G until we were 20 weeks -- abdominal. I guess I would think that each doctor does their thing their own way and that I would have to trust him/her as he/she is the one with the medical degree.

  • abdominal at 7w5d.  Saw everything including heartbeat so no need for tv.  Doc said if he couldn't see heartbeat he would've done tv.
  • transvag at 6 weeks and again at 9 weeks. I am told that you can see more detail with the transvag- never mind how lovely it feels!

i agree with the people you've talked to. they should have done a transvag.

  • I had a t/v one at about 8w5d. Saw little Gilbert and it's beating heart! I think I actually prefer the t/v kind since I can not stand the "omg i'm going to pee all over this table!!" feeling, pregnant or not.

  • My first u/s was at 7wks and it was tv. I have had 2 others since (one at 9wks 6dys and 11 wks 2 dys) both done tv. The last one was during my 1st Trimester Screening and they tried to do an abdominal one but it was still hard to see. I think it may be a good idea for you to request a tv u/s. You are still pretty early on and I'm sure that will be the best way to see what is going on. Let us know what happens.
  • I would definitely request a tv ultrasound.

I just had my first ultrasound earlier this week, at 11 weeks, and it was tv.
