How can I tell? (re: newborn tummy)

Avery was a pretty chill baby since we got her home, and then last night she was extremely fussy.  I'm talking fairly inconsolable, and then it continued into today (although she did sleep 3-4 hours at a time last night and fell asleep fairly early...hooray!).  When she isn't sleeping, she's crying, unless I carry her in the Moby.  Nothing's changed, so I don't know if something's bothering her?  She went home on Prevacid for reflux, and she's still taking that.  How can I tell if it's a gas problem?  We went ahead and bought Mylicon drops today and I gave her the first dose after I nursed her a little bit ago.  Brady was never particularly fussy and didn't have tummy issues as a newborn, so I don't have much experience in that realm.  I'm always hesitant to medicate and always second guess myself, so placate me and tell me this is probably her problem. :)

  • How is her breathing?  Is she grunting a bunch or anything when not being held on your chest?

ETA: Sorry, I'm sure those seem like random questions.... We had some issues with Jack (post-op) that were weird and seemed like tummy stuff but weren't really.

In your case, I would medicate. To see if it helps and so you can see if that's not really the problem.

You can do Mylicon different ways (before feeding, after feeding, or both) see if one way works better than another.

However, if the intense fussiness keeps up put a call in to your pedi and/or Dr. M's office.  Just to rule out anything else.

  • I may be mistaken (we only tried the Mylicon drops a few times) but I thought you gave them before nursing?

Her breathing sounds fine, as far as I can tell.  Not to sound like an idiot, but how would I know if it's a problem?  I know, last night I was freaking out and asking my husband if we should be calling the on call cardiologist, but he said he really thought it was gas/tummy issues.  The fact that she settled down to sleep easily and wasn't fussy during the night made me feel better.  I'll definitely call if it continues tonight.  Since giving her the drops, she's been sleeping for a while, which is encouraging.

    LOL, you're not an idiot!!

I guess I worded that weird... I meant is she grunting when she breathes? Like a little grunt with every breath...

I think she's probably just gassy too :)  But, I did send you a FBM.

I love the pictures you just put up - she's so cute!! You have a beautiful family!

  • Have you changed your diet at all in the last few days?

When I brought DD home, she was great for 2 weeks.  Then I started having a Mt Dew for lunch for the caffeine (don't like coffee), and I was eating a lot of dairy.  Then DD became extremely fussing, crying for hours, inconsolable.  I was at wit's end.  Called the nurse hotline and one of the first things they asked was had I changed my diet, what was I eating/drinking.

Once I cut out caffeine and most dairy, DD was back to her normal sweet self in about 24-36 hours.  I had to stay off both for close to 7 months, and then she was fine.

  • Garri - I am having the same issue with Olivia!! The last couple evenings she's been inconsolable... I'm worried it may be colic, but I think it's just gas. Giving her mylicon and watching what I eat and drink. We'll chat about our girls' tummies on FB, if you want! Keep me updated on Miss A - she is too sweet!
