Self diagnosis... SPD???

 Symphysis Pubic Dysfunction

Im about 95% sure i have this. Anyone else? The pain has been so bad at night sometimes i cant move at all.  I looked it up online and found some scary stuff . this article makes me feel a lot better. some other links made me feel like i wasn't going to have a vaginal birth etc. I started to get really freaked out. The good thing is that soemtimes I dont have any pain so i dont think its that bad. I'm going to talk to the doctor on monday. Some posts said that If you have this you need to get a referal ASAP and that its very serious...

Im just wondernig how normal this is. Im fine as long as I know I shouldnt be worried.... so please let me know Im not alone.

  • It comes and goes for me, depends how much walking I do during the day.  I started wearing a maternity belt and it's helped.  I also notice it only at night and there are times if I take a weird step backwards I get a pain in my lower back left hip area.

I haven't talked to my Dr. about it because I can still walk and I'm not in horrible pain. If anything ask your OB, they may send you to a Chiropracter.

  • Now Im paranoid! I almost cry every night when I roll over because parting my legs hurts so baldy. Lifting my legs individually to put on pants is pretty bad too. I just attributed it to normal pregnancy pains. Im going to bring this up with my doc as well.

  • I have this problem as well, mainly at night. I have cried many nights because it hurts so bad to even try and turn over.

And putting my pants on has been very difficult.  Last time I asked my doctor about this she didn't seem concerned, but maybe I need to ask again.  I have been having this happen since like 20 weeks.

  • My SPD started as mild pain while walking for about 3-4 days then over another couple days progressed to the point where I could not walk for 4 days straight It hurt to roll, put on pants, stand, or even bring one leg up to meet the other on the couch. I was in constant tears.

I saw my chiropractor and at the initial consultation he did a few adjustments which helped me be able to walk the next day with only moderate pain. He diagnosed me with acute SPD. I saw him 3x a week for a few weeks, then twice a week for another couple weeks. Now I am down to once a week. I'm still in mild pain (now I can't really differentiate 100% between the SPD and the pressure LO is putting on my pelvis) but he has made it a lot better and he also claims that the adjustments he's doing have been preparing my pelvis for labour so hopefully avoiding the c-section OP mentioned.

I love my chiropractor and 100% recommend anyone else who thinks they are experiencing SPD see one too. My midwife has not said anything about the SPD but seems glad I am seeing the chiro.

  • THANK YOU! geez.... i really started to feel alone.

Im going to see if my chiropractor works on pregnant women.... or better yet im going to get a referal from my ob.

This afternoon- im at work- I can barely stand up.....

Me!  I haven't been able to stand on one leg in weeks!!!  And as far as the rolling, I sleep with a folded up pillow between my knees (pretty thick) as long as the pillow stays in place I can roll fine (keeps my pelvis more neutral) w/o the pillow it kills to try to roll if my thighs get to close together!!

Sounds like round ligament pain....I've been getting it often...mostly at night when I try to roll over.  My doc says it's normal.  HTH

  • I keep my legs together (with a pillow in between) when I roll over in bed.

I pretend I have a miniskirt on when I get in/out of the car. So I pivot and sit down. Then I keep my legs together when I lift them into the car. It feels ridiculous, but it helps.

I see a chiropractor regularly (has been THE most helpful thing)

I have a maternity support belt (mildly helpful)

I avoid the stairs if at all possible. I also avoid pushing, pulling, or movements that would put more strain on my pelvis.

  • Go to a chiro! If you can find one that specializes in pregnancy, even better.

  • I had it bad enough to be on modified bedrest with DS.  My doc told me this time it will be worse and start earlier.  Instead, I'm still mobile and have had very little problems except rolling over in bed, getting in and out of the car, and after pushing things like a grocery cart with DS in it.  Sometimes lifting him causes problems, too.  A friend who also had it recommended wearing Spanx every day for as long as possible and I think that along with not gaining as much weight has made this one easier.

I didn't read your link, but my doc told me that SPD is probably the reason I only had to push a few times with DS.  Everything is already so loose down there that it doesn't take as much effort.  Aside from the pain, which usually goes away fairly quickly after birth, I've never heard of any major complications or lasting problems.
