Question about oatmeal

What kind of oatmeal do you give your LO?  The infant kind or something more like Quaker oats?  I read posts where parents say they give the LO oatmeal with fruit puree, and I'm not quite sure what they mean.  My LO wasn't able to eat any of the infant cereals due to severe constipation issues, but she's starting to get better and I'd like to try some oatmeal for breakfast once in a while.  I just don't know how to do it!  Help?

If it helps, the only oatmeal I've ever eaten is the Quaker instant kind, so I'm pretty oatmeal-ignorant Stick out tongue

Re: Question about oatmeal

  • DD eats the regular kind.We get the big cylinder and scoop 1/2 cup oats and 1 c water into a bowl. 2.5 minutes in the microwave and a few minutes in the fridge to cool it down. We make it thick so she can scoop it up or eat it with her fingers.

  • When E was smaller we would mix the fruit purees with the baby oatmeal to a 1:1 ratio. Now we do applesauce and oatmeal or mixed grains. We have not given her instant or homemade "adult" oatmeal because we still have a box of the infant/toddler stuff.
  • I use instant Quaker oatmeal (the packets) or I make the regular Quaker oatmeal on the stove.  My kids are almost 3 and 18mos.
  • We have some infant oatmeal, so I'll probably use that first.  When you say you mix applesauce or fruit purees with the oatmeal, do you mean you mix it directly with the grains, or do you mix up the oatmeal with water/milk first then mix that with the fruit?

  • DS has been eating regular oatmeal for months. We make it with mik, but don't add anything else. He loves it.

  • I use quick oats cooked with milk and add mashed banana.

eta: Because you said you're oatmeal-ignorant, there's steel cut oats (whole oat groats that have been chopped into small pieces and need to be cooked for 30+ minutes on the stovetop), old-fashioned oats (rolled oats that cook in minutes on the stovetop), quick-cooking oats (thin oat flakes that cook in one minute in the microwave), and instant oats (plain or flavored packets that are thin and precooked and only need hot water added).

  • We do the regular packets of instant. We even do the flavored ones (apple and cinnamon, strawberry and creme, etc).... I know many moms are anti-those b/c of all of the sugar, though.

  • For now, we're sticking with baby oatmeal. I tried regular oats a couple weeks ago when I was out of the infant kind, and DS was not a fan.
  • Cedric loves the Quaker instant oatmeal.  I do get him the flavor kinds and he would eat it everyday if we let him:)

  • We give DD plain Quaker oats mixed with pure maple syrup and cinnamon. She loves it! She loved the infant oatmeal and used to eat it both plain and with pureed fruit mixed in, but this way we only have to buy 1 kind of oatmeal (I eat it as well).

  • We get the big cylinder of our grocery stores brand quick oats. I cut the recipe in half, nuke it with water, and then add a little milk and sugar free applesauce or mashed banana. He LOVES!
