Parenting after 35

F/U to Baby #3 How old would you be?

My original idea was 3, but the closer I get to 40, I'm wondering if that's the right move.  I'm 39 now, I refuse to get pregnant this year, because frankly, I need a year off from being pg and/or breastfeeding (plus I'm turning 40 and we plan to have a kickass celebration in Las Vegas).   So, even if I wait until the day after I get back from Vegas, we are likely looking at baby #3 at 40/41.  Thinking that I will likely not be so quick to jump back in the saddle, and not wanting to take for granted that the fertility of my mid-30s is indicative of the fertility of my early 40s, maybe we're looking at 42 or (gasp) 43.

My sister had her youngest at 43.  She has a 16 y.o. a 15 y.o, and a 5 y.o.  So when her youngest child graduates from HS, she will be 61!  From college - 65!  Not that I will be much younger when my current 2 are out of grade school, but I won't be in my 60s!

I'd be in the same boat as you -- 40/41 minimum.  Plenty of people do it but it keeps coming down to whether my family feels complete and it kind of does.  I love holding babies and playing with them but just trying to imagine another seems like, well, MORE, not a completion of our family.

I agree.  The thing is, I do feel like there's a third baby in the pipeline (way out there in the pipeline).  Yet, I remember when DD was getting to be about 15 months or so, my family started feeling pretty complete.  Little did I know her brother had already snuck his way in!  So now, I'm kind of in "cup runneth over" mode.  Two, especially at their ages, is a lot!!! Yet I have this nagging feeling that there's one more to be had.

  • Crikey! It's been a while since you've been on here since I don't remember your new little guy!

Anyhoo, if we try for a second it will be within the next year so I'd be 38 or 39 for the 2nd. If, and that's a gigantic if, we went for a 3rd I'd be at least 40.

Yeah, I started posting a lot less right around the time I got pregnant with him.   I pop up every now and again to see what's going on.  The new little guy is almost 1 now (well, I guess you can see that on the ticker LOL) :D  I was 38 when I had him, and it wasn't bad at all.

  • I'm 38 now and not at all ready to be pregnant right now. If we were to go for a third, though, I think it would be sooner rather than later so I'd be 39 or 40. I wish I could just peer into the future and have some magical insight into whether we should stop now with two or go for a third...

  • I'm 43 now, and we might not be done yet.  We haven't decided.

My pregnancy this time around has been textbook-easy, and my doctor has not said one thing about my age.  I'm pretty healthy overall, though.

  • I was 38 when I had DS3 (I was 36 and almost 37 with the other two).  I am 40 and this one is due in three months.
  • I turned 41 two days after I had my #3.

  • I am 35 with two LOs DS#1 is 5 and DS#2 is 2 and am very on the fence about #3. If we decide to go for it I will TTC in late summer/early fall. I'm not as worried about age, but more of just being so far out of the "baby mode." Some days I'm sure we are done and yet a lot of days I feel that tugging at my heart for another one. I'm glad I'm not the only one feeling that way!

Best of luck in whatever you decide!

  • If we decide to go for another one, we won't start trying for at least a year (I'm 40 now), so the second baby would come (if we are lucky) when I'm 42, probably.  That would likely be it for us.
