Baby Names

Demetria?

DH and I were going through an old baby name book for fun and I read this one off and he really liked it.  I'm not sure.  How do you feel about it?  NN Demi.  I'm not usually a nn fan, but I'm sort of ok with this one, it does sould kine of like "dummy" though. Am I overthinking?

ETA: We have a fairly Greek last name too (DH is 50% Greek).

Re: Demetria?

  • No

It's kind of a mouthful and harsh on the ears.

  • I think it's a very pretty name. I have a friend I went to HS with and she spelled it Demitrea and went by the nn Demi. Very nice.

  • I have a Greek friend named Demetra. I like Demetra/Demetria!
  • I think it's beautiful. I had a college roommate named Demetria and she rocked. And the fact that it's derived from the name of an Earth Goddess is even cooler.

I don't think it's a mouthful at all. No more than "Olivia" or "Amelia" or any other name that's so popular these days. I guess it's a "mouthful" if your idea of a name is Kaylee or something, though. ;-)

  • Beautiful name :o

WHen I read the title I thought it said dementia...sorry, I know that's harsh, and maybe it's just early and I haven't had enough coffee....

  • I think it is lovely.

"Dementia" is the obvious tease/nn/drawback. I think that Demetra makes the "dementia" connection less obvious.

  • No  I think it sound like a weird illness or something.  Sorry, just being truthful.

  • No worries.  I was leaning more towards "no" on this one anyway.

  • Oddly enough, and I'm probably the only one who will make this connection, it reminds me of the Xanth series by Piers Anthony.  In it there are female demons and they all have name that start with De and then have a different ending.  One of the demonesses that is most prevalent is named DeMetria so that is all I think of.  For what it's worth she was one of my favorite characters, but I don't think I could use the name for that reason.

  • I love it! Yes This spelling only.

Demitrea looks like it should be pronounced dem-ih-TRAY-uh to me.

    I've never heard of Demetra.

  • I'm not a huge fan.

  • It's not terrible, but visually it reminds me of the word dementia.

  • I think it's a really pretty name and a great way to honor the Greek background.
