Question:Thumb sucking

Dylan has always loved his hands. Latley I find him sucking his thumb, and its just the cutest thing ever. I still offer the paci which he takes just fine. I try to not give him the paci when im getting him down to sleep and help him find his thumb, but he prefers the paci.

Is this pretty normal? When do they get the thumb sucking thing?

Re: Question:Thumb sucking

  • I think Aiden was about 5 months when he started sucking his thumb. I also thought it was really cute until it got bothersome.
  • I think it was 5-6 months.  In many ways, I wish he'd have used a paci instead.

  • B started sucking his thumb around 4 months, I chose to try and get him on the paci instead (which he took to) because it's easier to brake the habit.
  • I tried to get E to take the paci but she much prefers her thumb and always has. I don't think we had much of a chance because DH and I were both big thumb suckers. It is a very hard habit to break. Even when I was 7 years old I remember that it would go in my mouth while I was sleeping.  I'd wake up with these two big gashes in my thumb from my (adult) teeth. But eventually it stopped of course.

It is a big comfort to her, so whatever works.

  • I'm going to keep trying with the paci, I'm sure eventually he will pick one. Logan is big time on the paci, it's reallllly annoying.

I forgot to add that I also tried to keep pushing the paci with both boys and A just kept going for his thumb. He was able to break the habit only because he broke his left arm and couldn't reach his thumb for 6 weeks.

oh man, thats crazy! poor A, but I guess it got him off his thumb? My old coworker waiting till her daughter was 3, put a bandaid on her thum and she stopped sucking it. It all sounded too easy!

Q's an equal opportunity thumb sucker and has always preferred his thumb to a paci.  He's already getting gashes from his teeth.  I really hope it's easy to get him to stop someday.
