Fears

Michael is afraid of statues.  We were in a chinese place and there was a reproduction of one of the terracotta Chinese soliders and he got very anxious and tried to get away from it.  Then Sunday at church I was standing near the statue of St. Matthew and he started acting fearful again and looking at the statue.  We went over and touched the statue and talked about it but it still seemed like it freaked him out.  Anyone else with weird fears in their LOs?

Re: Fears

  • S is afraid of motorcycles and Mylar balloons.  Motorcycles I can get - they are loud and noisy.  But Mylar balloons?  Not sure where that one came from.

  • My sister brought Charles a few of her kids' old toys and he was super scared of the Tickle Me Elmo, Sleep n Snore Ernie and some sort of Tickle Me Cookie Monster.   They're the old-school ones that shake pretty violently, rather than just a gentle vibration.  (We refer to Elmo as Grand Mal Seizure Elmo--bad, I know!)

He's slowly warming up to them, but then still runs away and peeks back at them when they do their thing.

Added:  He's also scared shittless of an Elmo jack-in-the-box someone gave him.  I hate it, too, since it pops up randomly..not when it's "supposed" to.

  • M's fear rotate - strangers, baths, the vacuum cleaner - he's bee afraid of all of them and has since conquered his fears.Big Smile
  • R is afraid of the bathtub faucet.  She overcame it but then I went and put a stupid frog cover over it and now she is afraid again.  I took it off but she looks over her shoulder a few times during her batrh to see if it is there.  Her other fear, the salad spinner.  She didn't like it. I tried to compare it to one of her toys where you push the top and the thing spins, it still didn't matter.

  • I think it's totally normal. V used to love "doggies" but now she's teriffied of them.  She loves the bath but hates the pool.  And hey I still am "scared" of balloons - what with all the unpredictable popping - uggg!
  • T doesn't like LEAVES.  Yep, leaves.  She has a couple big plastic balls to play with in our backyard and if one gets caught in the shrubbery or too close to the plants w/big leaves she won't go near it.

  • Ellie is afraid of any kind of big trucks that rumble a lot, like garbage trucks, moving trucks, or pickup trucks with poor mufflers that are driven by idiot teenagers in my neighborhood.  She hears them and throws herself against my legs.  She is also terrified of the vaccum cleaner and wants to go outside when it is pulled out of the closet.  Lastly, she is afraid of bugs, especially ones that fly.

Oh, and oddly, she seems to be afraid of muppets!  She went through a phase of loving Elmo but now, when I try to put Sesame Street or Elmo on for her she immediately asks me to turn it off, and I swear she sounds afraid.

  • She's still afraid of the vacuum. I bought her a pretend one that makes noise even. Nope. Noway. She runs away from it.

  • Random noises scare Aaron.  And, like others, he's not a fan of the vacuum.

Sadly, he's not confronted with that fear too often as the woman who cleans our house bi-weekly does so while we're at the office. I say sadly because we don't vacuum as often as we should--with 3 dogs living in our home.
