Super Mommies 911!

My cousin could really use your help, ladies.  Her question from FB, "Anyone have any tips on what to do when a 21mo old baby wont stop crying for 30 straight mins?!!?"

Cousin volunteers as an advocate for foster children and does regular one-on-one visits w/the kids so obviously this isn't a baby she works with regularly or knows well.  I suggested it may be separation anxiety and she responded, "Yea, she kept saying "mommy." I tried ignoring the crying and reading out loud from one of those books that you can push buttons and make noise and that would work for a min, but then she'd start right back up. I need a better way to distract her, but where we have our visits is not very stimulating."  So does anyone have any great suggestions for her?  I gave her a couple but I'm sure she could use all the help she could get at this point.  She's really great w/kids but could use an extra hand right about now.  :)

  • Oooo - tough situation.  My "go to" to stop crying... go outside.  Something about the fresh air, open space, and quiet... that almost gaurentee my kiddo will stop crying.  (That a bubbles!!).  ;)

  • I regularly have clients (I am an early interventionist) who have melt downs at our first couple of sessions.  My go to is to sing a familiar song softly but with a lot of animation and hand movements.  Twinkle, twinkle is a good one.  Bubbles and outside are also really good redirections.  The big thing is to stay calm; little ones pick up on our anxiety before we even feel it sometimes!  Good luck!

  • I agree with ABC, I would go outside. I am not sure if that is possible where she is having the visit. My next one would be puffs or something like that :)
