How to help a phlegmy cough?

DS had pneumonia about a year ago and I'm so nervous this might turn into it again. Any advice for keeping that from happening?

We have a cool mis humidifier running in his room every night and he's getting plenty of vitamin C. Would running a steamy shower and having him hang out in the room help as it does for croup? Anything else we can do to help?

Re: How to help a phlegmy cough?

  • Does he have a cold right now? Is he very congested/stuffy, etc. If so, then I would ease off on the milk/dairy intake. We also swear by the Vicks vaporizer. It works wonders at night and during naptime.
  • Dairy always makes me kinda phlegmy, maybe cut dairy some and give more juice & water for a few days.  ?  I don't think the shower will help much, but it couldn't hurt.

Hope he feels better soon.  DD has a cough right now, too.  Doc said to let it go unless she's not sleeping.  poo.

  • Loading the player...
  • Lots and lots of liquids will help, too. It will help thin out the mucus which makes it easier to cough up.
  • Yeah, it's a cold that's moved down into his chest. His nose isn't too bad any more.

    Thanks for all the thoughts.
