Carriers - better back support and outward-facing?

So, I've been using the Baby Bjorn for Ruby, and she's getting so big that it is starting to hurt my back.  I've heard great things about the Ergo Baby Carrier in terms of back support, but I also read some reviews that the baby can't face outward in the Ergo.  Ruby loves facing outward in the Bjorn, so I'd love to get a carrier that faces outward and gives me better back support.  Any recommendations?

  • I know the baby can face outwards with one of the beco version.  I stupidly thought they all did and bought the wrong one on ebay;(  but maybe I'll have a baby that doesn't like to face out.

  • M loved to face out, but I took a chance with the Boba 2G (front and back carry, but facing in) and she LOVES it. For reals. MrsWildman saw it in action last weekend.

Less expensive than the Ergo, and way comfy. You can wear them up to 45lbs I believe.  M weighs 25lbs.

  • I love my Boba. And much easier to put on than my Beco.  Super comfy too.  The Bjorn killed my back.  They have an Ergo that can have a forward facing position.

My understanding in general is that it's not good for their hips to face forward. I'm not sure why, I just remember being told that by several folks when looking for a carrier.  Might be worth looking into before you buy a new carrier.

  • I have the Ergo, but haven't used it much yet. DD in general is not a very touchy touchy baby and doesn't like to be held tight, so the carrier has always been "meh" for us. I find the Ergo difficult to get on/off without help, but I think I just need more practice. It's EXTREMELY comfy once on though.

And yes, I saw Chandley and her Boba this weekend :) It looks really similar to the Ergo and I'm jealous of the lime green.

ETA: In case you have a membership - Costco has Ergos now and I think they're only $89 or so. They'll take ANYTHING back, so it might be worth getting one there to see if you like it so you can return it if it doesn't work out for you.

  • I was never able to do the Baby Bjorn; it always hurt my back. I had great success with side-carrying using a sling. Baby was pretty much facing forward, but no problems with my back and I had greater access to her than if she were on my back (with an Ergo).

Thanks.  I hadn't thought about whether or not facing forward is good for her physically.  I'll look into that.

That's a great idea, thanks!  I may just have to swing by Costco on my way home from work....;)

  • Do you want to borrow my ergo to see if you like it?  Unless you get the Costco one, that is.  I find it awkward but maybe because A isn't big enough yet.  You are free to borrow mine if you'd like to try it out.

  • I have a Beco Gemini. DD can face in or out or be on your back. I like how versatile it is. It's very comfortable for both of us. I bought mine at kid to kid in north austin. They let us try it out before buying.

  • I also have a Gemini and love it - I bought it because the Bjorn was hurting my back. I have an Ergo, but DD has not been happy facing in any time I have put her in it that way. I like that the Gemini has all of the options as the Ergo plus the facing out carry. And I found it easier to put on than the Ergo.

(And, randomly, DD is currently on the floor playing with the Gemini and has been for about 30 minutes - apparently it makes a good toy, too).

  • here's an article about dangling carriers.

I used a sling when he was little, then went to a becco then on to a babyhawk.

we tried the bjorn, but his little legs always turned blue in it.
