Austin Babies

diaper Qs

I want to have somewhat of a stash of diapers since this kid could be coming any day now.

- how many box(es) of NB diapers did you go through?  I know all babies are different, but 1 box? 2+ boxes?

- has anyone price compared NB diaper prices for costco vs amazon?  excluding coupons since I don't have any for either place.  I found some huggies for .12/diaper which I've read is a decent deal.

You'll find that babies may outgrow diapers in that the next size up is "better" but you can still squeeze a couple days out of diapers that are too small and finish up the bag/box. I'm frugal like that. Once they're not pooping every second of the day, what I would do is wait until they'd pooped and then use the smaller diaper for a few changes since it would just be pee and less likely to leak. Switch back to

If you keep the reciept, you can exchange diapers easily at HEB for the next size. I've heard of people doing it without the reciept (diapers from showers and unknown stores etc) but I don't like trying to be dishonest.

I don't believe Costco has Newborn diapers but I could be wrong. The Kirklands start at size 1-2 and I think I used Huggies size 1 for a few weeks before she'd fit in the Kirklands.

  • We used NB diapers for about 6 weeks, but DD wasn't particularly big and we had weight gain issues for the first few weeks. I wouldn't buy that many NB diapers since you could have a big baby that never even needs NB size.

Unless you have lots of coupons, I've found Amazon with the 30% discount to be the cheapest cost per diaper for Pampers. It's a consistently good price and super-easy--at my door in two days.

I'd buy 2 jumbo newborn packs (I can't recall how many they come with, but a pack lasted for about a week) and then one of those really big boxes of size 1 since you'll definitely need 1s for a little while.

  • We had a jumbo pack of Huggies Pure and Natural and Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive in NB on hand. I wanted to try a couple different diapers to see which i liked best. We ended up going through an additional case of the Huggies. DS moved into size 1 of the Huggies at 3 weeks. We went through 3 cases of them. I will add that Pampers run slightly larger than Huggies. Ditto Amazon for diapers.

  • Pamers do run bigger than Huggies ... it's based on weight, so always check the weight sizes of the diapers you are buying. Pamers vs. Costco have very different weight ranges per size.

I don't know how many "boxes" but she was in newborn for a month and she was very average sized - 7 lb 11 oz. I think "they" say babies use around 200 diapers a month. That is true for us now, but I think in the first month we went through a lot more since she had diaper rash and pooped so often.

What we went through: NBs for 1 month, size 1s for two weeks, size 2 for two weeks, and size 3 for a while now (a while being over a month, LOL). However, she grew very fast and is a .... big 'ol baby now Wink But might be comparible for y'all since you're having boys.

Wow--I thought DD went through the sizes fast. NB and size 1 each lasted about 6 weeks, and size 2 lasted a little under two months. She was in size 3 starting a bit before 5 months, and that is where we are now, with lots of room to grow.

DS was 7 lbs 15 oz at birth.  He was in NB's for 3 weeks, size 1 till 8 weeks and has been in size 2's since.  He is thin and tall.  At his 4 month check-up he was 13 1/2 lbs and 26 inches long.

Eek ... Olivia was 13 1/2 bounds at her 2 month appointment! She's 3.5 months old and has seemingly outgrown her 9 month clothes overnight. I had to go shopping last weekend for 12 month clothes. I'm terrified of what her 4 month appointment is going to say!

  • thanks for the info!  btw, for those who are already on to bigger sizes, I saw this earlier today - $4.50 in coupons at amazon:
