Babymoon...worth it or a waste?

I've been planning mini weekend trips to include my 12 yr old dd and my hubz. Next month (May) we are going to SF one weekend to see Cats and then another weekend next month to see the SF Ballet.

We also made some small out of town trips during the month of April as well. I haven't planned on anything for June just because if this little munchkin is anything like her sister, I'll likely see her two weeks early (mid June).

So with that in mind..I'm think me and dh might need a weekend for just the two of us. I really love bringing my daughter but I think it might be good to reconnect as well just between us two.

I've been reading about babymoons and seeing that some people do really extravigant (sp?) ones. I'm just wondering if any of you did or are doing them and if so, any tips for some non so expensive far away trips?

TIA!

  • Totally worth it IMO. We rented a beach house on the Mendocino coast for a few nights in November (DS was due in Jan). It was great and didn't cost much. Check out www.vacationrentals.com . We are hoping to do something again before this baby comes. Go for it, it will be a long time before you are able to do it again.

  • We did a pretty extravagant weekend in SF.. stayed at a nice hotel, went out for a nice dinner, xmas shopping in Union Square, and a 49er game. It was one of my best pregnancy memories

  • We were just talking about this this morning.  We're going to get out to Mendocino/Fort Bragg area for a long weekend, I think - just the two of us (for us, that means no dog...b/c seriously, as much as I love that dog, it becomes ALL abuot him when he's around ;)).  I am already counting free weekends left until baby and starting to feel a sadness over losing the all-to-myself time with my H, so it feels really important to me.  I'll probably be really emotional about it all weekend, and he'll totally regret taking his crying mess of a wife away for the weekend.  It'll be grand...haha....

  • Worth it. We flew up to the Oregon coast and had a wonderful time of sleeping in, eating out and taking long, quiet scenic drives and movies every night. And being that we haven't been away one overnight since... 3 years ... and if we don't get our act together we might end up going another few years ... Yeah, worth it!

  • I really think it is the time together that matters most, so I would do something fun that you might not to get for a while. I will be honest and say the one thing I miss most is the movies. I really love going for a double feature on a rainy day.
  • We went to Cabo San Lucas when I was newly pregnant with Sarah and it was great, even though I couldn't drink and we were at an All Inclusive. Just hanging on the beach, touring the area, going out at night, doing adult stuff that you don't get to do once the baby is here. I am really glad we did, although we won't be able to do so with this baby as we don't have anybody to take care of Sarah for that long.

  • Totally worth it!  We are huge travelers, it's something that is super important to both of us and we did a fair amount as single people.  We knew that it would be awhile before we could do anything again once we had a child and it was important to us to have one big last trip where life was simple stillBig Smile.

We went to England for a week, which I'm sure sounds crazy extravagant but my cousin and her husband were living in London and my DH had some incredible friends living in Oxford so other than our very first night in London we didn't have any hotel expenses and eating costs were low because we just did our shopping and had all of our breakfasts at home and almost all dinners with pretty much lunches out and about.  I could not be happier that we did.  It was an incredible time for us and we definitely treated the trip differently knowing that it was the "last hurrah".

I think there are lots of creative ways to travel on the cheap but it depends on what you are interested in.  Here are a few things I've done

    Spa Trip

-Fairmont Princess in Scottsdale, AZ.  We went in July and yes it was hot but even my mothers who lives on the coast was fine, she was blown away actually that it wasn't as bad as she expected.  It is cheap, cheap, cheap, mid summer. They have the most amazing adult only pool and we each had one spa treatment and then milked the spa experience that entire day as their spa is enormous.  For 3 days, 2 nights our total was approx. $800 for two people, including spa treatments, meals, hotel and flights.

    Mexico

-Cabo is cheap!  3 girlfriends and I went for 4 nights, huge room with a sitting area, all inclusive.  Cost $499 each.

Vegas has a ton of incredible deals right now.  I would give anything to be able to snap one  of those up.

    Websites I love for deals

    -Travelzoo.com

    -Priceline.com

-Voyage Prive (this is one of those invite sites but I'm not sure that you have to have an invite.  If you need one I can email you one if you want)

Personally if I'm trying to save a lot of money I always priceline my hotel and then spend the bulk of my budget either on plane tickets or spa experiences.  To me the trick to have a kick ass cheap vacay is to choose the area most important to you and splurge on 1 area, be it food, hotel, outtings.  Even if you want an incredible hotel you can still get amazing deals on 4 or 5 star hotels on Priceline.

  • My idea of a babymoon was hanging out at Costanoa eating girl scout cookies and soaking in their extra deep tub (in the lodge room). The tub took the pressure off of my joints and the fresh air was super nice. I also liked that it wasn't so far away because I didn't feel like spending as much time on travel or money. Yeah, the lodge was more than I wanted to spend money on so we only went for one night. It was memorable though.

My only advice is to not eat their restaurant. Our waiter almost got a fork through his hand when he tried taking a plate of food that wasn't finished from a pregnant woman (me)! Ha! I blame pregnant reflexes!  Instead, drive into Pescadero to Duarte's or somewhere like that.
