How to wean off 1 pumping session?

I EBF and have pumped twice a day (morning and evening) for at least 1 1/2 months to build a freezer stash for when I return to work.  I'm one of the lucky ones who produces a lot of milk and I end up freezing about 18 oz per day.  When I return to work, I will be pumping twice a day at work and at home as needed.  I feel that I do not need to keep freezing this amount of milk so I want to cut out my evening pump.  It may be a dumb question, but how do I go about doing this.  I made the mistake of just dropping it completely one night and I was in agony all night and screwed up the next morning too.

Is it best to just drop it cold turkey for someone like me who produces a lot, or is there a weaning process?  I thought maybe a weaning process could be pumping for a shorter amount of time to not fully "empty" the breasts, but I have no clue if this would work.

Any advice would be nice.  If I just need to suck it up and be in pain for a couple days, let me know!  Thanks!

  • Since just dropping it didn't work for you, I would pump for less amounts of time.  Like if you pump for 20 minutes now, drop it down to 15 minutes for a few days, then 12, 10, 7 and so on.
