AF post D&C

Hopefully you can follow me here...

I went off BC after being on it for 7 years in January '10 and in May my AF started getting lighter and lighter and had pretty much whittled down to nothing so my OB prescribed me Provera to kick my AF into normal cycle in Oct.  It worked and I got pregnant in Nov and of course m/c and my D&C was Jan. 25th. OB and I had discussed right after the d&c that if it didn't come back after 6 weeks we would do another round of Provera due to my history. AF came back right at 6 week mark on March 5th.  It was SUPER heavy and the first time in my life I've experienced cramps like that.  It lasted for 10 days.  Now here we are April 18th, I'm not pregnant and still no AF.  My AF was always pretty regular on the date, even when it was whittling down to hardly anything.  We want to start TTC right away again but feel like that's not going to happen if AF isn't regular. Should I call the doctor and consider doing Provera again?  Wait a little while longer?  Or is it pretty normal that my AF be all over the place in terms of consistency post D&C?

Re: AF post D&C

  • My first AF post D&C came like clockwork.  It was the 2nd one after that didn't come for almost 2.5 months.  I took Provera, nothing.  Provera again?  Nothing.  Acupuncture is what I really believe worked.

    Anyway, hope it comes soon!

  • Mine came back quickly (month later) after my miscarriage. I didn't have a D&C. I would call. Worst case they have you wait a little longer before giving provera.

  • I have no experience with a D&C so can't give you any thoughts there.  My experience going off BC was similar though.  My AF fell down to pretty much nothing after 3 months, but I never had it naturally before BC either so I half expected this to be the case.  I did have to take Provera a few times and then Clomid to make me ovulate.  I'm not saying that scare you, but rather to encourage you to be proactive about talking to your gyno about it.  If I hadn't been a regular reader of these boards, I probably wouldn't have been so intent on talking about this with my doc.

After the first time taking Provera, I think she told me to call her again if AF didn't come on it's own after either 35 or 45 days.  Can't remember which.  I took Provera a second time and started Clomid on that cycle.

    Good luck!

  • So frustrating, I'm sorry.  There's nothing worse than wanting so badly to TTC again and not having your body cooperate.  :(  My cycles were a little whacked out after my 2nd d&c.  It took like 90+ days to get my first period (after a failed round of provera).  My second was 30+ days after that, and I was usually like clockwork on day 27-28.  After that one I got pregnant with DS, so I can't speak for my cycles beyond that point.

If it were me I'd give it a bit longer and avoid the meds if possible.  But as usual, call your doctor if you're concerned.  Hugs.

  • Hugs.  I hope it comes soon.
  • My first AF took FOREVER and when it did come, it was an absolute bloodbath. I woke up feeling a trickle and when I got up to walk to the bathroom, things got ugly. I joked with DH that if I ever went missing they wouldn't believe he didn't dismember me in there. After that it was 28 days on the dot for 3 months until I got PG with Abby (first try). It was also a better period if that makes sense. My cycles used to start with a lot of brown smudging for 2 days before red blood. Ever since my D&C, Bright red blood from day one. Weird.

I hope AF shows her ugly face so you can get on with the show!

  • I hope it comes soon for you.  I'm hoping I won't have to wait long either, I'm expecting mine in 1-2 weeks, but my NP said if it doesn't come by 5-6 weeks post d&c she will start me with Provera.  Ugh, feels like that's forever away.
  • Oh and try wearing some white pants and take all tampons, pads, etc out of your purse.  :)

  • I got AF 28 days on the dot after my D&C/miscarriage.

I think they might make you wait a little longer for Provera, but it doesn't hurt to call and ask.

It stinks when you really want to get the ball rolling, and your body just won't get with the program.

If there is any possibility you ovulated late, I'd test again in a few days.

I also find that taking another pregnancy test helps bring on a missing period.

Scheduling some special time with your DH for tonight won't hurt either. AF loves to ruin romantic plans.

Going to get a qualitative HCG blood test at the OB works wonders too.  Oh, and going on a big 30th birthday trip w/ DH worked for me as well.  Oh wait, that was the same cycle. =P

  • Thanks ladies!  Their rule of thumb is they want you to wait 45 days of no period after the first to start Provera.  Well, that has come and passed so they called in the RX for me.
