Megan was 2.5 when she went from crib to twin. It was much easier than I thought. She didn't start getting out of bed until a month or two after the transition. We just talked it up, she came with us to IKEA to get the bed.... She was super excited about her new bed.
We moved Kennedy into her big girl bed at about 21 months (mainly because we didn't want to have to buy another crib!), and it was truly a non-event. She slept all night in there the very first night, and has ever since. At the beginning, I don't know that she actually realized that she could get out of bed by herself, and even still, she always stays in bed when she wakes up in the morning or from her nap until I go get her. Occasionally she will get out of bed to get another toy or book before she falls asleep, but she climbs back in and settles down on her own, and we haven't had any issues with her staying in bed or in her room to sleep. It was much easier than we anticipated - hopefully it will be the same for you!! Good luck!
Oh, and as far as any tips for success, the only thing we really did to prepare her was to set up her bed in advance and tell her that soon, she would get to sleep in a big bed just like Mommy and Daddy. We would read her books before bedtime and naps in the big girl bed, and then take her to the crib. After a couple times of this, we started asking her if she wanted to sleep in her crib or her big girl bed until she asked to stay in her bed, and she's never gone back to the crib.

Good luck! I hope it goes smoothly!
