What are you splurging on? (for baby)

Alright ladies, what are you splurging on?

Can be services, things for the baby, things for you to use for the baby (pump), etc.

Married: 3/01/08

Re: What are you splurging on? (for baby)

  • Our goal is not to "splurge" on baby items. We are finding good deals and saving money. We have to buy a new car to fit all three kids in the back so I guess that would be our "splurge".

  • Loading the player...
  • We registered for a breast pump that is $279. If we do not get it I will for sure be buying it for myself. I also plan on getting merry maids for a deep cleaning before the baby comes. It will be easier to maintain once its done once really good. I have two dogs so they are really the reason my house gets messy. My H and I are very simple and clean people anyways. I just know with the new baby and house guests it will be nice to have someone come in and do it for us.

  • Nursery decor. I really want LO to have a cute, decorated nursery. Logically I know that he won't even notice it until he's a bit older, but it's really important to me so I am spending money on things like wall decals, fancy sheets (and matching changing pad covers), rugs, etc...

  • I guess the brand new car we just bought is our splurge.  My car was about to die and we decided to go new instead of used because there really wasn't a big price difference with the deal we got.  Now Mommy's got a swagger wagon!  lol

  • The nursery I would say. We put more money than we thought into the furniture, paint and decor. We want our crib to last through multiple children and the dresser to last until they are 18. Everything is neutral and can be used for multiple children.

Also... we registered for and probably won't get the City Mini Stroller. We will probably have to buy that. I just can't stand bulk and this stroller is lightweight and functional for many purposes but about $100 more than others.

  • I just researched the heck out of carseats, and it looks like the best option for our car is a huge splurge.  But it's cheaper than a new car, I suppose ;)

Daycare is insanity, but any cheaper option just didn't feel as right as the place we found.

It was important to me that our crib come from a company with a committment to sustainability, and that it not be made in any part in China...so that was a splurge as well.

  • I'm trying really, really hard not to splurge... but we are getting a cleaning service to come in before the baby comes!

Also, I'm definitely buying this print  - it's only $40, but that's a splurge for us considering DH is a designer/illustrator, so all the other art will be made by him for free! haha

I can see myself going crazy with the vintage "touches" in the nursery, especially with all the free time I'll have over the summer- but I'm resisting for now!

    This exactly!

  • I haven't splurged on anything yet, and I think my registry is mostly really practical stuff. But once she is born, I will definitely splurge on picture printing, professional photos, etc.

    1. Cute cloth diapers. I want them adorable, highly rated, and easy to use. And I want a lot of them. I am also getting 1/3 girl themed, which is a splurge since I don't know if I'll be able to reuse them for the next child or not.

    2. A really good stroller. I love hiking and camping, but I'll have to stick to walking and trips to the park. This will make my newly restrained life easier and more bearable. Plus it folds up pretty small for a stroller this size and weighs in at 20lbs, which I can lift easily.

  • Our "splurge" item would be the stroller/infant seat.  We bought the Britax B-Ready and absolutely love it.

We had planned to spend whatever we needed to on a recliner/glider...but got really lucky with a great deal for way less then we planned.

  • Like a few pp's- nada!

We're lucky in that we really don't need anything, and those things we do need someone is getting for us.

Plus, I splurged too much last time. Embarrassed

  • For us, it will be the bedroom furniture and the stroller.  I guess the furniture is to be expected, but for the stroller, we fell in love with the UppaBaby Vista.  We're not putting it on our registry till after our shower...then we'll use the completion coupon for the purchase.

I am totally stealing the Merry Maids idea!

  • I'll splurge on good daycare if I happen to be most comfortable with an expensive place, and I'll splurge on items that will improve the quality of our life - to me, that would be things like a hiking baby backpack so we can continue doing a lot of outdoors stuff with baby, and probably a jogging stroller (once I determine how serious I am about getting back into running ;)).
  • Organic crib mattress and mattress pad.  It's important to me that my baby not be breathing in the chemicals that are off-gassed from traditional mattresses.  So, to balance it out, I went for an $80 Ikea Gulliver crib.
  • I splurged on basically everything. I bought all our furniture and bedding from PBK. I hit up Swaddle Designs for blankets and burp cloths. For clothes, I have gotten most on sale though, but I bought more expensive brands. I plan on only buying all this stuff once for all future children, so I figured I get what I loved, and hope that the better quality products hold up well!

Keep an eye out for a groupon.

I purchased a Merry Maids groupon before getting pregnant that was $33 for 3 hours of cleaning service.  It is good for a year so now I am saving it to use them right before the baby comes !

  • I think our only real big splurge is going to be the stroller. I really want a nice jogging stroller that I can use to walk/run with and also use as an everyday stroller so I"m splurging and getting the BOB revolution.

Right now we are putting more money into getting our house ready for the baby... getting a new furnace, re-tiling the roof, new countertops, fixing our plumbing, new hardwood floors in the baby and guest rooms, painting, etc. But thats all stuff we would have done anyways, the baby just kind of sped up the time frame of all of them haha.

  • I guess you could say we are splurging on a rocker/glider. We have most of what we need for DD and we've gotten deals on everything we do need so far. The chair will be the most expensive thing we buy for baby.

Ditto this. The things that I would consider "splurges" aren't really splurges since I'm trying to get things that are high quality but find good deals on them. I guess it's still a splurge for a cheapskate like me.

I AM sort of splurging on a diaper bag, but that's really for me, and that's after giving up months of pedicures to save up for it, and knowing that I probably won't get time to get another pedicure for quite a while.

probably the bedding - it's custom made by a good friend with an etsy shop and even though I'm only getting 3 pieces made (skirt, quilt and bumpers), I'm sure it won't be cheap. BUT we're not really buying much else for her.

  • For services: I am most likely going to hire a cleaning service for the first few weeks I am home with baby.

Things: DH bought me a DSLR for Christmas and just recently bought a new zoom lens for it for our anniversary. We registered for a jogging stroller that is close to $200, and we plan on getting it if no one else does.. seems unnecessary since we already registered for a travel system but I love running and want to be able to take LO with me. Also, I am going to have to get a new car eventually.. so that is going to be a big splurge as I am considering keeping my current (dream) car as well.

  • A quilt.  I'm having another nestie make me a quilt (not baby sized, but kid sized) and the fabric alone was $$$.

We also bought a used Peg Perego stroller that ran us $300.

I SO want this stroller! Haven't been able to make the commitment yet but it looks so perfect!

  • Our stroller has really been our only splurge so far since we already have furniture, bedding, baby gear left from DD. (Thank goodness for getting gender neutral the first time around!)

We got the Baby Jogger City Elite double stroller and the carseat attachment bar to go with it. (While it was a splurge, we bought it on clearance for only $225... and it's regularly a $600 stroller!) I'm happy with that!

  • The only splurge item thus far has been our nursery furniture. It was nearly $1400.00. Ouch! I also splurged on nice maternity clothes.
  • My biggest splurge is the strollers, for sure. We're getting a Bugaboo Bee pre-baby's arrival, and then will invest in a BOB Revolution after about 6 months when I can run with it. We live downtown in a huge city and don't have a car, so strollers really take a lot of punishment here between subways/taxis/walking miles and miles etc...

The other splurge is a super modern and fab glider plus ottoman.

But I've kept to budget by being reasonable with other stuff and doing a lot of DIY stuff for the nursery...so even with splurges we're not breaking the bank by any means :)

  • The only thing I am splurging on is a new breast pump.  Using a used one kind of grosses me out.  However, I am going to try to get by without one altogether.  I am going to see how bf goes after LO is born.  I am SAH, so hopefully I won't need one...
  • -diaper bag (Petunia Pickle Bottom, but it was $50 off since it was a discontinued pattern at least)

-Mobile ($120 handmade) and clock ($68 handmade), both pieces I'll keep forever and loved before we were even trying- plus, our nursery is TINY, so I wanted the few pieces in there to be things I really loved- I can also reuse them in other rooms if necessary

-Only AIO/AI2 cloth diapers, and only new (not really a splurge, since we plan on having at least 3 kids & cloth diapering saves a lot long term- but it's a splurge upfront)

-Fence (we used our tax rebate/extra savings) to keep dogs in the yard

  • Buying the BOB Stroller!  My sister has one and loves it.  I'll definitely be getting one.

  • We plan on using all of the same stuff that we used for DS except for clothes because we are having a girl. Since we dont have to buy so much stuff we are splurging on two things....a Britax b- ready stroller with the extra bottom seat and an Ergo baby carrier.

  • we had such a hard time TTC & have waited sooooo long to be able to buy stuff for this baby, so we have been buying stuff like crazy but it is really the best time in our lives & I wouldn't think twice:

We have bought Nikon DSLR which I luv!!!!

PBK : nursery furniture (catalina- I rec. it) & coco dot bedding & room decor

I consider my diaper bag a splurge but I am a bag lady lol & will be carrying it for some time. I am not saying how much it was bc it ppl would prob slam me :)

IDK if the Quinny stroller would be a splurge but we got it and luv it too.

& we obviously have bought such cute clothes..ahhhh thats almost the best part lol.

Congrats ladies, this is such an exciting experience & I love becoming a MOMMY!
