A lot of women vomit during labour and it has nothing to do with anesthesia.

I was induced at 9am and had my daughte at 3:54 am.   I didn't eat at all during that time, I'm pretty sure adreneline helped me push.  i didn't feel hungry until after all was said and done.

Yeah but if you are upright and awake they don't care that you puke... they only care if you regurge and aspirate while under anesthesia.

so, is the ONLY reason they tell you not to eat because of the CHANCE you might need an emergency cs?

if that's the ONLY reason they tell you not to eat, that doesn't sound very favorable to a laboring woman... especially one that has little to no chance of actually needing a cs...

Yep, I'm nearly 100% sure that is the only reason.

  • With my first, I went in at night to be dilated. But, I was already dilated and effaced, so they did nothing (no cervadil needed). They ramped up the pitocin at 7 in the morning and my water immediately broke. I asked for an epidural and they said that the I would be able to take anything by mouth but ice chips. I honestly didn't even want ice chips and food didn't even sound good to me at all. I gave birth to my son at 12:47pm. I don't think I ate until much later that night, and even then I wasn't really hungry.

Just wanted to let you all know that you may not be hungry at all and it might be the least of your worries like it was for me.

I had absolutely no desire to eat while in labor; in fact, the mere thought of food made me feel sick.

However, I was STARVING after I had given birth!!  But sadly, I was on the mag drip for pre-e & couldn't eat a single bite of anything for the next 24+ hours :(

This.  And I didn't eat before I went to the hospital at 6:00am -- so I had nothing to eat for almost 24 hours, and I never once thought about eating during labor and delivery!  Don't worry about it -- your body can handle it!
