i swear i heard my garage door open last night

i haven't been that freaked out in a long time. e is sick and i was up around midnight trying to fall asleep and i swear i heard "a" garage door go up and down. my dh always checks and it was down when we went to bed. i listened to the noise until it stopped ... thinking surely it was a car outside or the toilet running but it wasn't. (i rarely get scared at things that go bump in the night) i woke up dh and we searched the house. i was sure someone was hiding in one of our vehicles. i wanted to call the police but didn't. i'm hoping maybe it was the neighbors garage but i'm not 100% sure i could even hear it from our room.

so all of us this made me think about protection. i'm not a gun person but maybe an alarm? does anyone have one? we live in a small town, "safe" neighborhood ... i don't know but it wasn't a fun feeling - at all.

Re: i swear i heard my garage door open last night

  • Saturday night (DH was away this weekend) I heard a knocking on our backdoor later in the evening.  No cars had come up the driveway (we are well, well back from the road and the backdoor is hidden from the driveway) and we have solid bush all around the house.  No neighbour would come-a-callin' if you know what I mean.

So, heart thumping a bit hard, I went downstairs to investigate.

Wild turkey pecking at the door (glass french door).  Stupid effing bird.

I (uncharacteristically) locked the doors before going to be that night.

you normally leave your house doors unlocked at night?  or do you mean your bedroom door.

  • Our house is frequently unlocked at night. We lock the front door but often forget to lock the back garage door and/or the connecting door to the house.

Our neighbor two doors down went to Europe for 3 weeks a couple of years ago. They inadvertently left their front door standing wide open and no one even noticed. Nothing was missing. We live in a really safe neighborhood. :-)

Sometimes I dream that I hear things and wake up thinking it was real. Maybe that's it?

If I knew how to do a poll, I would do a poll.  But we all know what the results would be anyway.  Stick out tongue

ETA: Remember that scene from Bowling for Columine where Michael Moore (so not a fan of this guy) walks into several homes in Toronto while checking to see if people lock their doors?  It's like that, only it's nearly the whole town.

I made it a clicky poll so we'll get honest answers.  Not the standard nest "I have a 500k security system and personal guard at all times".

  • That would have scared the crap out of me. We don't have an alarm (and prob won't get one) but we have good locks, lock our doors and have safety stops on the windows. Won't "stop" anyone who truly wants to get in, but it's something.

  • I also sometime 'dream' noises but think they're real. It totally freaks me out. We have electric garage doors that can't be opened manually from the outside. We also live in a safe neighborhood area but I lock every door at night. We used to be bad about it at night but ever since that home invasion here (in ct) a few years ago, NEVER AGAIN!
  • maybe i was "dream hearing" things ... i sure hope so but i was pretty wide awake after cleaning up poor pukey ethan.
