REALLY bad diaper rash

J had a little diaper rash before we left him with my mom over the weekend, but when we picked him up it was BAD. His whole butt is covered with red bumps, all inflamed, and they're actually *weeping*. It's awful. Aside from letting him have naked time and slathering him with A&D ointment, is there anything else we can/should do?

I'm considering calling my pedi but not sure if it's too much to call over diaper rash . . .

Re: REALLY bad diaper rash

  • I like to use Aquaphor when DD has a diaper rash.

I've also heard baking soda baths are good for diaper rashes but we've never tried that.  Good luck!

  • That actually sounds like a yeast infection to me (DD gets them all the time), and may require a prescription cream. I would definitely call the doctor.
  • I also would have the pedi look at it just in case it is a yeast diaper rash and he would need some prescription cream.  Molly had it over the winter and it also got bad very fast and took a while to heal.
  • oh, I feel your and your DS' pain. DS had something like that along w/ horrible horrible hourly poops. I did a lot of air drying and stopped wiping w/ wipes, I washed him w/ water and gently patted with a towel instead. I ripped up an old bedsheet and put those pieces inside his disposable diaper to simulate a cloth diaper. Aquaphor works (usually!) to prevent rashes, but not to cure them in our house. I got a prescription (which cost us $194!!!!!) for Vusion and it finally worked. I also heard good things about Triple Paste and Dr. Smiths diaper cream.

the scars from the rash took months to go away. I hope he's better really soon!!

    ETA: definitely call the pedi!

  • Thanks, everyone! Now I feel less crazy about wanting to call the pedi. He's had a yeast infection before, but I don't remember it being this bad.Ugh.

    Calling now.

  • Agree with PP, stop using wipes. We used paper towel with water on it.  We had aweful diaper rash for most of month 2 ...

Love Aquaphor all over as a large barrier but also used hydrocortisone for 2-3 days to clear up "sores".  This is only to be used on the affected sores, not all over under the barrier cream and use small amounts.  We learned this after 3 ped visits and we saw improvement very quickly.

  • I don't bother making an appt with the pedi anymore when the kids' rashes get yeast-infection-y - I just make the (pedi approved) home version of the cream which is equal parts vasaline, diaper cream, and Monistat 7 cream.  I use one tablespoon of each.

Call your pedi and ask about that if you don't feel like taking the time/energy to take LO to an appointment just to get the prescription stuff.

I was going to say - if you ever got APNO when you were bfing, you might want to try that. It heals just about anything and has an ingredient that kills yeast.

    The DC Nest. Winers welcome.

  • We just had this same problem - due to a viral infection with diareah. Our Dr had his own concoction: equal parts neosporin, A&D diaper cream and Lotrimin AF.

It really worked wonders...we had tried like 4 different creams and nothing else worked. This started working right away and took maybe 4 days to really clear up the issue.

This is almost exactly what our pedi said! It's Lotrimin AF morning/night, and then Aquaphor and Neosporin mixed all over. Plus no wipes, and vinegar baths? That should be fun and not stinky . . . anyway glad we didn't have to go in and can more or less handle this on our own.

Cyndi&Matt - good to hear that about hydrocortisone! My dad always suggests it, but for some reason I thought it was kind of old school/taboo.

    Thanks for the tips, ladies!

  • I know I'm super late but I want to throw my vote in for Triple Paste.  That stuff is the bomb in my book.  I break it out whenever DS gets a really bad rash and it clears up quickly.  But that does sound a lot like a fungal rash - so hope your little man gets relief soon!

It's posts like these that remind me how much I have learned about being a mom from this board!
