Diaper Rash and Oranges??

Some background:  DS has had a pretty bad diaper rash just around his perianal area for about a month now.  At first the doctor thought it was strep because of the way it presented.  But after 7 days of antibiotics with no improvement, he decided it wasn't that and we stop the medicine.  At that time he thought maybe it was just eczema and gave me a prescription cream.  That seems to work in making the rash less red, but the severe redness, rawness, etc, still comes and goes.

My new theory:   DS started eating mandarine oranges (like almost daily) around the same the rash started.  It seems to get worse on days that he eats a lot of orange.  And it's really red and blistery looking right after he poops.  So, my new theory is that the oranges (or the acid from the oranges, to be more specific) are causing the rash.  Has anyone else heard of this or had this problem with citrus fruits?

Re: Diaper Rash and Oranges??

  • when i introduced mandarin's to my LO it was a small amount...  a couple days later he ate quite a bit...  his next BM thereafter was not his typical solid...  and he had a small rash.  so i made sure to not give him so much next time and it never happened again.

  • Yes. We've had this issue with DD. Acidic foods can cause a yeast rash to worsen. I'd ask your pedi to call in a prescription for Nystatin and lay off the oranges to see if there's any improvement.

Yes! My DD had a nasty rash for months before we figured out it was because of fruits/tomato. We tried all sorts of prescription and OTC creams which only helped a bit. The rash has been gone now for 5 months ever since I cut out the acidic foods.
  • Yep. We have to be watch her orange intake. If she has too much she gets a really bad diaper rash. If she eats them in moderation she is fine.
  • Thanks everyone.  You guys supported my theory.  Orange and strawberries were the only different things DS started eating when the redness began over a month ago, and I notice it gets worse when he's eaten a lot of orange (i.e. 1/2 or more of a mandarine orange).  Plus he also cries when pooping/diaper changing when he's had orange.  So, I guess we'll try it in moderation - like a bite here and there and then cut it completely if that doesn't help with the rash.

We had to completely cut all fruit out then very slowly re-introduce them one at a time so I could find out what she can tolerate (so far only watermelon, apple, and cantaloupe for fruit). Literally one small piece of orange/strawberry/tomato/grape and the rash is back in full force. GL!
