Two Under 2

C-sections with 2u2?

DH and I are wanting to have our kids close in age, but I ended up having a c-section with DS because of a past pelvic injury (my pelvis was too collapsed in on one side to let DS pass through).

Since I know I have to have a planned c-section next time, I'm wondering if I'm crazy to be wanting to start TTC so soon... my midwife said we should wait until DS is 1 year old... preferably 2. Sigh.

Anyone have two c-sections really close together? Experiences?

Re: C-sections with 2u2?

  • I haven't had my second C-Section yet but my doctor was not concerned at all when I told her I was pregnant again (less than 3 months after I had my first).

And, I was never told to wait a year, much less wait two years!

And then... I was given the option for VBAC.

Turns out the risk of uterine rupture is not as high as the medical profession one thought and there have been a lot of recent medical journal studies advising that such strict guidelines for #2 are not as necessary as once believed.

    GL to you!

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • I had my second c/s at 14 months post first. It was fine.

  • I haven't had my 2nd c/s yet, but this is my experience so far...

During my annual appointment (about 6 months postpartum) I discussed TTC. I was warned that EBF could make things a little difficult and not to be disappointed. I was not told to hold off.

By 6/7 months postpartum I was KU. I wasn't testing frequently because I didn't want to get my hopes up due to EBFing. At 8 months postpartum I got a BFP. I was told that I would have to see my perinatologist due to having had a c/s so recently. Days later I found out I had conceived triplets, so I was fast tracked to the perinatologist and certainly considered high-risk.

To be honest, my perinatologist wasn't thrilled. I'm sure a large part of his concern was about having multiples. He literally said "Didn't your OB tell you not to get pregnant so soon?" I told him no. He seemed a bit surprised.

Long story short I actually lost two of the three babies. My OBs and my perinatologist recommend that I deliver via repeat c/s at 38 weeks. I'm scheduled for Wednesday.

I'm looking forward to 2u2. My perinatologist quickly came around and there have been no negative comments since. My OBs all seemed thrilled for DH and I.

  • I will be having a scheduled c-section a little under 11 months after my first c-section.  My doctors did advise we wait 6-9 months after DD before TTC, but when we got a surprise BFP they were happy for us and not all that concerned.  Good Luck!!!

BTW, since your OB said wait 1-2 years, did you have any complications with your c-section?  Maybe they want to give your body specifically time to heal?

  • I had 18 months in between csections.  I was cleared at my 4 month checkup to start trying for #3 if we wanted.

  • I was never told to wait. DS was born 19-1/2 months after DD and #3 will be about 18 months after DS.

    This exactly.

  • At my 6 week visit, my dr cleared me to start TTC whenever I felt ready. I ended up finding out I was pg right around the time my DS turned 5 months. I went to my 8 week checkup with my 6 month old, and my OB said "I didnt think I'd see you back here THIS quickly!" He was fine with me getting pregnant so quickly. The only thing he did differently was check my vitamin levels since many women are vitamin deficient after giving birth and if necessary I might have had to take some extra supplements. I ended up being fine. The pregnancy was a breeze, minus some discomfort where my incision was during 1st tri. The recovery from my 2nd c-section was a bit more difficult than my first, probably because they were spaced so close together (less than 13 months apart). However, even knowing what I know now I'd still do it this way. I wouldnt want them any further apart then they are.

However, after this one my dr told me to take at least a year off before we started TTC again since I mentioned at my 6 week visit that we may have 1 more.

  • After DS I was EBF (pumping at work) for a year and didn't ovulate until he was ~ 12 months old.   We were not trying to conceive, but not terribly dedicated at preventing either.  My OB did not advise us on any specific time to TTC or to wait to TTC.   As it happened, our DD was born when DS was 23 months old.   Repeat C-section.   No major issues.   Surgery went fine and recovery was good.  Will be having another C for this delivery also (will be just over 3 years from last C).

No complications at all. I only stayed 2 nights at the hospital and no infections etc afterwards. Very straightforward.

  • my mom had two csections 11 months apart...and this was after having a uterine rupture with me 12 years prior when she attempted a vbac.  She had no problem whatsoever.

My csections were 18 months apart and I also had no problem.

  • My two c/s were 16.5 months apart.  My OB actually said there's some indication that c/s closer together are healthier for mom.  He encouraged me to get pregnant as soon as I'd like.

Both of my recoveries were super easy.

  • My doctor had told me they prefer to wait 18 months in between c/s, to give the uterus and body time to heal. But I know many have done it successfully sooner! I'll be 23 months apart for mine (2u2 for a month!) - the first was a c/s after unsuccessful labor, the second will be scheduled c/s.

  • Mine were 20 months apart and I had no issues. Recovery was fast both times.

  • My doctor told me to wait a year before getting pregnant again and I was told I could try for a VBAC (which I had). Personally, I'm glad I waited. A c/s is major surgery and not something I'd want to rush my body into dealing with again so soon.

  • My two are 14 months apart and were both c/s. Both c/s were planned but the second had an easier recovery, believe it or not. My dr was not concerned about me getting pg so soon after DD1. Also the main concern is normally uterine rupture, which is not a concern if you're planning a c/s. I wouldn't let your midwife scare you away from 2u2. There are plenty of us 2u2 moms that had two c/s and we all live to tell the tale. GL with your decision.
