the end is near! gah!

i can't believe i'm getting so close to the end! instead of being a total AW and posting a million times i'll just ask my assortment of random questions in one post Smile

* Hospital Packing List -- I noticed a lot of lists out there say not to bring jewelry. Like leave your wedding/e-ring at home?? Does LO really need anything in the bag other than a coming home outfit and maybe a blanket?

* What do I need to make sure we have for LO when we get home?? Not like there's not stores around but I keep feeling like I'm missing something obvious like diapers (we're not we do have 2 packs of NB diapers & wipes) but yea... just trying to make sure there's not something obvious like diapers which I've totally failed to think of!

Ok i had more questions but of course can't think of any of the others now... Smile

Re: the end is near! gah!

  • Yay for Flyboy!!

--hospital: leave all jewelry at home. You'll likely swell. I liked having a couple of outfits for LO so that she didn't have to be in the hospital clothes if I didn't want her to be (we ended up staying 4 days in the hosp., so it came into play more than if we'd been in and out in 2). But totally not necessary--the hospital clothes are more than fine and good for not having anything on their little belly nub.

--home: diapers, wipes, mylicon, q-tips, cotton balls, clothes, swing, wherever baby will sleep should be ready...I think that's pretty much all we did in the beginning. Oh, and an infant tub for when you do start bathing him, but that could be a week or two (probably just wipe him down with wet cotton balls in the very beginning).

    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • Loading the player...
  • No advice on the jewelry...my water broke in the middle of the night and we went tithe hospital as-is so I was already jewelry free. I don't know if they make you take everything off in the event of a c/s, but it would be tougher to keep track of if you *had* to take it off. I vote leave it at home.

The hospital will provide everything your baby will need while you are in the hospital. Bring the coming home outfit (bring a spare in case your primary one doesn't fit) and a light blanket.

All you REALLY need is diapers & food (your boob or formula). All the other stuff is not as urgent and can easily be gotten from the store as needed. (Although I don't know what you'll need for cleaning your DS' circ.)

  • jewelry- by the time i delivered (both times) my rings no longer fit, so it wasn't an issue. i'm pretty sure i had my diamond studs in b/c i always wear 'em.

LO (at hospital)- your baby (literally) needs nothing. they will provide you w/ diapers, clothes,  thermometer*, suction bulb, blankets, Vaseline & gauze (if you are circ'ing).

LO (at home)- we used WAY more burp cloths (just cheap prefold cloth diapers) and we went though TONS of onesies in the early days. Lots of spit up and lots of poosplosions.  *thermometer- they will provide you w/ on at the hospital, BUT, it is super slow. Suuuuuper slow. W/ infants, your pedi will always want a rectal temp so that it is most accurate. I would suggest a quick read thermometer that you can use if needed. Nail clippers.

When you're at the hospital- have them give you extra of every thing *you* need for post delivery care (i.e., sprays, pads and wipes for YOU).

  • YAY!

I left my wedding rings at home.  No, LO doesn't need much.  Coming home outfit, one blanket.  We brought a few clothing things for DD and she peed or pooped on them, and it was a PITA to haul home stinky baby clothes - much easier to put them in the hospital clothes you can just toss into the laundry pile.

Not much, really.  Diapers, wipes, vaseline, all the gear you've already got (swing, bouncy, pnp, etc.)  HUGE pads for you, and also huge undies in case you end up needing a c/s.  Not kidding on the huge.  I bought a M thinking that would be "huge" and BWAHAHAA!  I had to send DH out for size XL panties, and he almost died of embarrassment.

    Good luck!

  • YAY so close!

You really don't need to bring anything for baby.  The hospital will have everything you need.  I just brought a going home outfit and baby book so I could get foot prints done right after birth.  You can bring a light blanket if you want, but I just took some of the receiving blankets from my room and used those.

At home... diapers, wipes, sleepers, rectal thermometer, pacifiers, gear for feeding whether you are breast feeding or formula feeding, and a few light blankets to swaddle.  Anything else, someone can run to the store.  Ditto having wherever baby is going to sleep ready to go, and either a bouncer chair or swing for lounging in the family room.  We never got a baby bath tub.  DD got many baths in the kitchen sink, and then we got her a bath sponge to put in our bath tub to bathe her on.

Def. take everything in your room in PP and ask for extras.  You will need plenty of the big pads, sprays and Tucks.  The mesh panties are nice to use too.  Totally agree with mlf on getting some cheap larger panties!  I didn't have a c/s, but I didn't want to leak and ruin my nice panties, so I made DH go to Target and get me a cheap bag of Hanes!  :)

Ohhhh undies that was one of my questions. I'm still wearing my pre-pregnancy undies even though they don't really fit.  I keep forgetting to go buy some cheapies but one size up is probably not enough??

  • The main thing we had to run to the pharmacy was for Senokot S -- never knew I'd need it, but they recommend it to everyone I believe.  :)

  • I left all my valuable jewelry at home but took a faux ring to wear on my wedding finger because I feel naked without one. The one I wore to my first ever knottie GTG =) I brought my own wipes for LO because the hospital ones are the same throughout the hospital. And the smell reminds me of cleaning up drunks and the elderly. The other newborn stuff I can't help you with, it's really been too long. I have total mommy amnesia.

    I'm SO excited for you!!!

  • You're in the home stretch--yay!!

Hospital--leave all jewelry at home.  In case, they do make you take off everything for C/S.  Bring a going home outfit for LO.  DH went home to feed our dog, and he brought back our boppy, which I liked having.  You won't need your own undies--they give you some...and they are lovely, (wink, wink.)  Bring your baby book, if you are doing one, so like pp said, you can get the footprints done there.

At home, if you are circ-ing, it will vary from doc to doc.  Our doc had us clean using rubbing alcohol and cotton balls.  Ditto a ton of burp cloths, and blankets.

  • I'd definitely have some NB outfits/onesies on hand at home. I thought 0-3 month clothes would fit but they were huge on H.
  • THE NEST ATE MY COOL POST!!!

Mesh undies. They'll get you through after vag or c-section until you can shop for panties.

    image

Take a bunch. They're awesome. Don't steal extra diapers. The bump boards stay to do this all the time. The Nursery nurses aren't stupid.

Ear plugs if you plan on sending LO to the nursery. Hospitals are noisy.

Sleep Mask. Hospitals are very bright and some people find it difficult to nap during the day anyway with the ambient light through the window.

Ditto on the nail clippers. The hospital will not give you those. I needed them with both the girls.

Our coming home outfit for Emily was a premie size! Fit her perfectly at 7.5lbs. Didn't fit her 7 days later =) We had a NB outfit just in case. Otherwise in the hospital, their stuff all the way.

I brought my boppy with Emily and it was a wise choice. Hospital pillows suck for nursing positions.

Drink LOTS OF WATER following the birth. Bring Crystal Lite etc or Cold Brew Decaff Tea bags if you need encouragement. ASK for the stool softener as frequently as they'll give them to you and have a bottle to take at home. Take them for a week or so unless it works too well.  Double Plus important to both of those if you are taking any pain meds besides Ibuprofen or Tylenol. Vicodin/Darvocet and even Tylenol #3 will stop you up like nobody's business. You do not want to strain pooping after any kind of birthing business.

That's all my sage wisdom for now ;)

  • I'm in the minority here, but I never had any swelling and I wore my wedding rings the entire time, even through my c-section. It was never mentioned. I'm actually glad I'm wearing them in all of my birth/newborn pictures. I never took it off the entire time I was in the hospital, so it was never an issue for me.

I took several footed sleepers for DD to the hospital, as well as some other clothes. I felt like the sleepers would keep her warmer and it allowed visitors to hold her without getting all wrapped up in a blanket. I took the same dress that I wore home from the hospital as her coming home outfit, but it ended up taking them so long to discharge us that she got really fussy, so we ended up changing her into something more comfortable to actually bring her home in.

Ditto the other posters about making sure you have enough stuff for your recovery. I had bought a package of Depends so I didn't have to worry about ruining all my underwear, but they rubbed my incision so I didn't wear them. The idea was great, though. And definitely take your own toiletries and towels. That first shower you take after delivery is heaven and you will want your own stuff to enjoy. Plus your own towel will be softer. I also took my own pillow and blanket because I knew I would be cold and the hospital ones are so thin.

  • hahaha i've always imagined the mesh undies just looking like regular undies but omg lol! thanks for the visual! will have to show DH when he gets out of the shower. those are HOT! haha.

thought of another question -- going home outfit to help avoid their umbilical cord nubby... i can't remember what's suggested... a loose onesie right? pants can ride up/rub on it?

I had DD wear a loose fitting onesie on the way home.

Confession:  I still wear my extra mesh panties when i rag sometimes.  those things ROCK!  hahahaha!  I liked their extra-large pads, also.

I am one that the stool softener did it's job TOO well.  So I never request that unless I know I am having issues...but they tell you to take it so...to each their own.

Everything Taytee said is awesome advice.  Don't be afraid to take your pain meds if needed.  If you forget and take your jewelry, your DH can care for it.  If you end up in a c-section, they don't want you wearing jewelry...that goes for most surgeries.

For hosp: Bring your favorite soap/shampoo/conditioner/toothpaste.  Helps you feel fresh after a shower...helps you feel normal.  I also liked to do it so that my baby would smell me and know it was me even when we went home.  Might be silly...

For home: Whatever you forget, you will have time to get.  The most basic of needs the hospital will send you home with.  Send hubby out for food and meds immediately after you get settled at home.

You asked what the baby should wear home?  anything you want.  "nub-nub" will be fine.  You most likely won't be moving him around all that much that day.

If you have a "special outfit" that has been worn by every baby coming home for generations...wear it.  If you bought this cute little outfit...put it on.  When you get home, you will probably put him in a onesie for ease of changing...swaddle him up real good.  (If you forget to buy a swaddle/blanket, a large t-shirt will do!  :)

Congrats and try to remember these moments!  (Speaking as one who will never have a "week 36" again.  *sniff*)

For the umbilical stump, right? NOT the circumcision???

  • I can't stress enough to definitely ask the nurses for a bunch of the mesh undies, ginormous pads, dermoplast spray and this Rx foam stuff (I forget the name) for at home.  Also, ask if they will give you an extra spray bottle to use for rinsing off after going to the bathroom.  I kept one upstairs and one downstairs since you can't wipe for the first couple of weeks.  And like Taytee said - stool softener!  The Vicodin is a killer...it's feels weird enough pooping after giving birth w/o being constipated.  :)

Congrats on almost being there!!  How exciting!

  • Ditto everyone else, pretty much.  I only brought one outfit for DS and he wore the hospital stuff.  They pee and poo so much, their little cord nub will start sluffing off pieces and that gets on clothes (plus I think they put iodine on it and I'm pretty sure that stains).  I think it's just easier to use their little shirts.  I did bring socks, mittens, and a baby nail file.  S's nails were SO long and he really scratched up his face within hours.  :(

For me, I didn't bring anything to wear really and I wish I had.  I felt like a hefer in the gown when visitors came.  I liked it for night time so I didn't have to worry about staining it, but for during the day next time I'll bring some comfy pants and t-shirts.  I packed my own toiletries and loofa, etc.  I also am really glad I had brought a few pairs of disposable nursing pads with me.  My milk came in the night before we left and that next morning I was leaking EVERYWHERE!  I'm sure they could have gotten me some, but I'm glad I could just reach in my bag and grab them ASAP!

*Oh, I brought my own pillow and boppy- the boppy was a must learning to bf!!

Sorry.  You're right.  What was I thinking?  It's been a long day in the sun building things and I think my brain is fried.  We would not use rubbing alcohol on circ.  Sorry again.

  • Ditto about having stool softener at home. And bring home all the mesh panties you can - they are awesome. My main problem was we brought too much, and it was a PITA. My favorite things were toiletries and an outfit for me. I was sooo glad to shower and change. Oh and bring an empty bag to carry home all the stuff the hospital gives you.
  • I am so glad you posted this so I can start making a list! I am so happy for you! Although I will admit I am jealous that I'm 6 weeks behind you lol! GOOD LUCK! I hope everything goes perfectly for you!!!
  • Ditto the stool softener- we had to send someone out for that when we got home. We did have to get prescriptions filled anyway- but still if you get it ahead of time you will pick out what you want.

Can't believe it is time!!! Congratulations to you!!

  • I liked having wipes at the hospital...SMC uses wet paper towels, but the wipes were way easier for me when we discovered them the second day in.  I also am apparently unable to swaddle well so I liked having the swaddle sacks.  You're taking her out a lot to change her/him, feed her, etc. so if you can't swaddle it makes things a little difficult.

I'd pre-make a phone group to send texts/pictures (if smart phone) to.  I didn't check mine and it got messed up, but it was nice in the rush of the moment.  I'd also bring sandals or loose shoes for you.  I ended up with an emergency C-section, so received ~10 liters of fluid between my sixteen hours of labor and the surgery so there was no way any of my other shoes were fitting (my husband went home for some for me).

Otherwise I agree with everyone else.  Congratulation and good luck!!

Don't have anything to add. PP covered it all. But remember to charge your camera batteries. and take your camera to the hospital. Big Smile We gotta see pictures of your sweet bundle!
