when did LO smile?

My son was born at 33 weeks. He is almost 10 weeks old and still hasn't smiled yet. He smiles while sleeping but no purposeful smile yet. I know I should be treating him as a "3 weeker" but he is cooing and holding his head up stronger but no smile and it makes me worried.

DS was 26 weeks and I am pretty sure that he was between 5-6 months (2-3 adjusted) before he smiled-and not because of gas.

Thank you so much for posting! I know I am jumping to conclusions but I was starting to wonder if he has some neurological problems because he hasn't smiled yet. It gives me comfort to know that someone else knows how I feel and went through the same thing.

For this - and all milestones really - make sure you look at adjusted age. My son did it somewhere between 6 and 8 weeks adjusted - which is just about when the books say it should happen.

I wouldn't worry at all - I think you still have another month or so before you should see a real smile. Smile

My babies just started smiling in response to us in the last 2 weeks so around 15-16 weeks old (8-9 weeks adjusted). You definitley have a few more weeks to go before you get worried.

It takes forever. My DS is a 34w waiting for the first smile was the longest. I got worried and asked my friend who had a 34 weeker as well and she said that waiting for the first smile is the longest hardest milestone. After he did smile the distance between adjusted age and actual milestones got shorter and shorter. Good luck and give it time.
