Baby Names

My neighbors' kids

My neighbor moved in about 2 weeks ago. She is really nice and all but her kids have names that I don't hear very often. I'm not sure if the names are real names or made-up names. She has a 3 year old named Bessina, a 1 year old named Emmett, and a 4 month old named Keedi. Are any of these names made-up?

Re: My neighbors' kids

  • Emmett definitely is not.  I love that name...used it for one of my kitties.  :)

  • Well, obviously Emmett is not a made up name. I like it. Bessina - i have never heard... BUT I kind of like it because you could call her "Bessie" as a nick name. My grandmother had a friend named Bessie, although I do not know if it was a nickname, or her actual first name or not?! Keedi, I have never heard. Not sure of my thoughts on that one.

  • I don't think they're made up, they're just not very common in the US. Is your neighbor Australian? Bessina and Keedi are both Australian names.

Emmett is English, and means "universal".

Emmett is not popular where I live. Bessina goes the nn Bessie. I used to have a beagle named Bessie.

  • Keedi, probably. Emmett no, and I bet Bessina is just a variation on Elizabeth, same as Bettina or Bethany.
  • PS: All names are "made up" at some point.
  • Bessenia reminds me of Jessenia/ Yessenia which is a popular name in Latin America.

  • I actually like Emmett a lot.  Not a fan of the others.
