How many do you need?

In general, how many outfits do you need in each size as well as blankets, burp cloths, all other types of linens? I am having a hard time gauging if I bought too much and should return or need more. Thanks!

Re: How many do you need?

  • I really depends on your baby. We only generally used 1 outfit and 1 pair of PJ's per day because C didn't spit up that much. But if your baby spits up a lot or blows out of diapers you might go through multiple outfits per day.It also depends on how frequently you do laundry/have a washer at home.  We only had like 3-4 pairs of PJ's and that was fine for us but I know that wouldn't have worked for other families.

Personally I'd estimate on the low end of need because you can always get more and they grow out of the sizes so quickly.

  • Definitely depends on your child.

Cole used about 3 outfits a day, on top of bibs.  He was a reflux baby.  He also used about 2 sets of pjs at night - but at the same time, he grew on average a size a MONTH.  He was in 12-18 at 5 months old.

I would start out with enough to make 10 outfits and onesies.  I would also invest in some gowns so sleeping - they make life so much easier in the middle of the night.

And since you're looking at a summer baby, I HIGHLY recommend Carter's speedy-exit creepers.  They are onesies, but they snap all the way down the middle, so there is no over the head changes, and if they start to get hot you can get them some air even while sleeping!  Cole was born July 25, and LIVED in those alone in NB!

  • Oh, and as far as the other stuff...  again, looking at a summer baby, I would get a 4 pack of Aden and Anais muslin blankets, they will be your go-to in the beginning because they are light and breathable.  I also used about 3 regular receiving blankets.  I would get one decent weight knit blanket for any cold days before you have time to prepare for it.

Again, with reflux, we needed a TON of burp cloths...  I would probably start with 2-3 3packs of them.  I have about 30, and I still went through them!  I personally prefer the Gerber ones that are like cloth diapers with the thicker part in the middle - but a pack of cloth diapers is cheaper, I'm just a sucker for cute designs.  :)

I needed one mattress pad, 2 crib sheets, 3 sheet protectors (again, reflux, not a necessity) and 3 swaddlemes to make nights easier.

  • we have a stack about a foot high with bibs. our burp cloths are about 6 inches high.

as far as outfits...some days you'll go through 5-6, some days 2 outfits. Depends on how often you want to do laundry.

  • I've decided that receiving blankets are kind of a waste of $$.  We had a ton, and used maybe 3-4.  Burp clothes we used plenty of, like 2-3 per day, so I'd recommend 10-15 unless you want to do laundry constantly.  We've always had a lot of outfits (both grandmas LOVE to shop), but you could probably get by with 8-10 shirts and 8-10 pairs of pants plus sleepers (5-8?) in each size.  We also went through a lot of bibs; at times, DS needed one to catch his spit-up.
