Preemies

PDA

Audrey was diagnosed yesterday with a PDA that is "moderate to large"... They thought it had closed at first but apparently they can re-open after awhile? Anyways, she's been on almost room air - between 24 and 27% - for a week now but still needs a high rate of breaths per minute, so they're hoping that by fixing her PDA it will help that and they can start to wean her off the vent (YAY!)

They're going to infuse her today with platelets and then start her on Indocin (which trips me out because it's the SAME medicine that they gave me to stop my contractions). They have to stop her feed while she's on it for two days because it puts her at a higher risk for NEC while she's on it but otherwise the NNP said that there's not that many adverse side effects.

Has anyone else had any experiences with this? I know PDAs are pretty common with preemies, but starting ANOTHER medicine with my poor baby is kind of disheartening and the NEC thing is pretty scary. Any input is very appreciated!

Re: PDA

  • Audrey is adorable.  My little Madison was also diagnosed with a PDA.  She had a moderate PDA and was treated with indocin (three doses in each course) it closed somewhat and she was very stable.  It then opened up again and they threatened ligation surgery because her oxygen requirement went up as did her vent settings.  They just tried a second course of indocin and it helped close it some more but it flucuates from moderate to small and back again.  her vent settings and oxygen need are still high (28-38% depending on the day).  The doctors were at odds about doing a third round of indocin, doing nothing and doing the ligation surgery.  Ultimately they decided not to do anything at all.  We are hoping that it simply closes on its own as some PDA's are known to do  depending on the size of the PDA and the age and condition of the baby.  We have been very grateful to avoid the ligation surgery so far.  I hope the indocin closes up Audrey's PDA right away.  But you will find by reading and talking to your doctors that Ligation surgery is not as popular as before - GL to you guys - T&P for Audrey's quick recovery and hopefully soon the girls will both be on CPAP!

  • Hi there!  Lots of us have had experience with PDAs.  It can be scary but so far, we've all had good outcomes.  Here's a recent post about our PDA experiences:

My experience with this board is that you don't have to scroll for a previous post before asking a question.  We understand you don't have time for that sort of thing :-)  Sunday's can be slow on here so I just wanted to direct you to something recent.

And I'm sorry it wasn't clicky - I forget how to do that on a mac.
