Blankets in the crib?

At what age did your LO start sleeping with a blanket in the crib?  I usually put one over DD for naps, but I'm awake while she naps and have the video monitor with me to watch her.  What about at night?  Right now there is nothing in her crib at night except her.  She has been sleeping in the footed pajamas, but now that she is moving into 12 month clothes the pajamas change in style.  The kind we like from Carters stops at 9 months, and the 12 month size they have of the footed pajamas are way too long and fit really tight.  They suck.  So we are moving her into pajama sets that have t-shirts and pants.  I'm worried she is going to get chilly at night.  Should I be worried about it?  What did your 6 1/2 month old sleep in?  Did you use light blankets at night?  We keep our house at 75 24/7 if that makes a difference.

Re: Blankets in the crib?

  • From my understanding, it's better (safer in re. to SIDS) to keep it kind of chilly.  I think I've heard between 68-70.  Would she keep socks on through the night?

This isn't from experience at all, just what I've heard.  I'd say avoid the blankets if possible.  I think there was a post about it recently (maybe that was about stuffed animals though...)  I just remember Taytee's response was pretty strong against extra stuff in the crib and that stuck with me.

  • Thanks for the link... I totally missed that post!
  • https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/51892306.aspx Try another brand of jammies? Children's place is cut a little lean too though I think. Emily's are a size up for her chubby legs. The feet stretch and slip if she's in them all morning but we're moving into warmer weather so staying in Pj's all day not an option =D

It seems like many brands are skinny once you hit 12 month size.  Gymboree and The Place are all too tight.  I read the other post (missed that the other day) and I didn't realize those sacks came in much bigger sizes so we might go that route if it is needed.  I'm going to see how she does in the t-shirt/pj bottoms first.  :)

  • I put DD in a onesie the other day with some trumpette socks on to keep her feet warm and she did pretty well.  I think someone else asked, do you have socks that she'll keep on?  I always hate that no matter the temp, DD's feet are like ice cubes.

  • When it's really hot outside (90+) we put DD in a onesie with a sleep sack.  If it's a little cooler then pj pants+tshirt and a sleep sack.  if it's really cold long sleeve pj's with pants and a sleep sack.  We'll see about dropping the sleep sack this summer...

  • One of the other reasons we keep our kids in their sleep sacks so long is that otherwise they get their legs stuck in the slats. It happened the 1st couple times we tried to let Abby sleep without one. Midnight screaming not cool. I also feel like it keeps them from being able to climb out of the crib or even realizing they can since they can't hike their leg up that high. Emily is about to outgrow the XL ones and the zippers are shot after 2 kids anyway. Since Em is still so young, I think we might give the ones with feet a try and just sew the feet closed at first. I have to check the measurements and such to see if that will work. Emily can't cover herself up at all yet although she loves playing with blankets during the day. We keep it pretty cool in the house.

BTW - I don't know why my above response posted so late! I sent it from my phone and must have hit a dead spot and the page reloaded and posted or something. I posted it minutes after the 1st response. I wasn't meaning to beat a dead horse.

  • Regarding the pajama issue:

I love, love the Walmart $5.00 organic cotton two piece pajamas. Lots of cute designs, very soft, and stretchier than other brands. The more they are used, the more easily they stretch out.

DD can't wear the long and skinny pjs, but the Walmart pjs are perfect for her. She is mostly in a size up (just into 12 month clothes but wearing 18 month pjs, which are a little big). She can still fit into the 12 month pjs, but they are a little more snug.

These are the pjs of which I speak:

    https://www.walmart.com/ip/Faded-Glory-Baby-Girls-Short-Sleeve-Fitted-Pajamas-2-Sets/15599885

In-store, they are $5 per pair. Online, it is $10 for 2 pairs, with 97 cent shipping. There is a bigger selection online.

Regarding the original question, we do pjs and socks and have recently been experimenting with no sleepsack. No blanket in the bed ever, but she has mostly been in a sleepsack since leaving the miracle blanket.

The Halo sleepsack comes in lots of sizes--Amazon carries up to XL. The medium, which is what we use now, is a very generous size and is supposed to fit 6 to 12 months.

I think I love you. I really really want to get the girls Hanna Andersson but I can't stomach or afford $42 PJ's for two girls!

These pjs also go from size 9 months up to 5T. Best kept secret at Walmart.

And the shipping is 97 cents per 2 pairs since the pjs are sold in sets of 2 online.

  • I know what you're talking about re:the carters jammies.  We have only ever put S in carters footed, but there's a secret.  Not all of them are the slim fitting ones, at least in the little boys section.  On the tag-less area the slim fitting ones say something, but for the life of me I can't remember what it is.  They feel different too.  The wider fitting ones are softer and the slim fitting ones aren't.  The slimmer ones also stretch a little and the softer wider ones don't.  They are all mixed in together, so you have to find a design that doesn't say whatever it is that the tighter ones say.  I JUST bought DS like 5 new pairs and had to look at all the tags.

Okay, I just found an old pair and I think the slim ones actually say "Wear Slim Fitting" on the tagless area and the regular ones just say "Super Comfy".  I could tell just by looking at them in the store which ones were slim fitting and which ones weren't.  I hope this helps you!  I've tried other jammies with DS and he just won't sleep well in anything else.

They have the same thing in the girl's section, too.  The non-slim-fitting ones are more of a shiny/silky material whereas the slim fitting ones are a true cotton.  We still wear Carter's pjs -- I prefer the footed style versus trying to get DD to wear a two-piece & socks -- and DD doesn't really mind the slim fit too much.  They are a bit snug the first night out of the wash but they definitely have a little stretch to them.

Costco Wm Cannon has some Hanna Andersson zipper PJ's for $12 I think. I got a couple pair for Little Girl and they had lots of sizes, i think. Worth calling them and asking

I'm thinking the difference is the slim fitting ones don't have the flame retardant treatment on them. Those jammies have to be labeled as intended to be worn fitted and therefore less of a fire hazard. I think I remember the fluffy fleece jammes being very roomy and having flame stuff on them. I know the thin fleece microfiberish? ones they sold at Costco 2 years ago were very slim fitting to where they almost cut off the circulation to Emily's feet!! Both girls outgrew them before the label size.

I don't have a Costco membership anymore but I know someone who does! I keep forgetting they have Hanna sometimes. I hope they still have them. I'll probably get a mix - Hanna for Emily who is still in one piece and the Wally World ones for Abby. I can't get Abby to wear bottoms most days anyway. I told DH tonight we should just get 2-3 packs of white undershirts in 4T, let her paint them and call them her PJ tops.

  • Natalie's had a blanket since just shy of 6 months, but we didn't move her to the crib until almost 7 months.  She loves it and it's the only "thing" she's attached to...she grabs it the second that she gets in the crib, rolls on her side, sticks her thumb in her mouth and goes to sleep.

I don't think I'm too laidback...she can pull it off herself, and rarely has it on her...she just holds it.  It comforts her and helps her sleep better.

  • B has slept with her 'lovie' and a blanket since she was 4 months old. I'm super laid back and it helps her sleep longer. We also are big fans of gap footed jammies!
