Cloth Diapering

A knitting/crocheting question

I've been drooling over adorable skirties for awhile now, and I'm fairly crafty so I've been thinking about learning to crochet and making my own. I know how to knit, and I've heard from friends that crocheting is easier. I've been thinking about buying the Wiggle Bunz Creations Patterns for soakers, skirties, longies, etc.

My question is- I'm not really familiar with yarn prices and such, so for those of you who make your own, do you find it to be cost effective? Are you saving money doing it yourself over purchasing ready-made pieces? Or after buying all the wool and stuff would it be comparable? I guess you only buy the pattern once and can use it over and over so that seems like it's saving money.... enlighten me please. :)

Re: A knitting/crocheting question

  • Do you prefer the look of crochet over knit?  If you already know how to knit, there are tons of free patterns on Ravelry.com.  For the pair of longies I knit, I just used 100% wool from Joann Fabrics that I bought on Black Friday.  I think the yarn was $12 total, and I have a skein and a half leftover.  You can buy really pretty, hand dyed yarn, but the cheap stuff (as long as it's 80% wool) works as well.

  • It's for sure more cost effective to do your own. Now wool you can get anything from $6 a skein to $20 a skein depending on what you get. I prefer 100% wool and have used everything from cheap Joann's stuff to expensive. Some yarn pills more than others. When babies are not mobile it doesn't matter, but when they start crawling you will want stuff that doesn't get super pilly fast.

  • The cheapest skirties I've seen are $40-50. I firmly believe I can do that cheaper, if I can find the time.

Thanks for the referral to Ravelry.com- it has tons of patterns!! For both knitting and crocheting too- now I just need to figure out what's at my skill level. :)

  • Be prepared for a learning curve with crochet.  People say it's easier, but as someone who also learned to knit first, I found it really difficult.  It's like skiing vs. snowboarding...I need two poles!
