does your child do this? DD does this and I wanted to know if aother 4yr olds did this? She will do this especially when she is bored, or coloring or something that does not require to be fully enagaged.
DD has been stuck in the house for the past year, no interaction with peer really and we think she thinks the TV characters are her friends and will repate lines from tv shows/songs/and books, sometimes adding her name into the conversations.
I have talked to pedi about this and we even saw a specialist yesterday but i did not agree with their findings.
We are now making more social interactions with peers for DD.
thank you for sharing!
Re: Does your 4yr old repeat lines from tv/movies?
DD does that alot. Her imaginary friend's name is Strawberry (like, Strawberry Shortcake). She loves to sing, and generally sings the theme songs to her favorite TV shows/movies. She's picked up catch phrases from her favorite shows, too. There was a phase when she was saying "Aww, Shoot" all the time, because she loved Mater on Cars. I really am not worried about it. She is great interacting with kids and adults, her vocabulary is good, she is smart as a whip (she informed me the other day that Neptune is a gas giant ... I didn't even know that).
I worried a lot about her interactions with other kids too, but her teachers say she is normal. Within a few days, she found another little girl who she became best friends with very quickly, and she seems to get along with other kids pretty well
Yes, my boys will repeat some lines or the theme songs to movies or shows. But to not take your child out of the house to interact for a year, is a bit much. You should sign up for some community activites, or go to the park and let her make friends. Is she going to preschool? That's a great way for her to make friends.
Something I did was join a mom's group with kids the same age as my boys. They've made lots of friends.
My son repeats lines from movies as well. Right now he loves to pretend he's Thumper from Bambi. I don't think it's such a bad thing. He attends preschool and has been making new friends this past year.
Did I see in your signature that you have triplets?! Wow! That would definitely make it much more difficult to get out of the house. Definitely don't feel guilty about this past year. I had a very complicated, unpleasant second pregnancy, and my son was stuck in the house with me for most of the 7 months. It's not the ideal situation, but sometimes you have to go into survival mode.
My three-year-old does this. It's called scripting or delayed echolalia, and it's a symptom of her autism. She was diagnosed last month.
She adds her name, or our names; or changes other words; but she definitely repeats scripts, especially when she's bored, doesn't know what else to say, or is using them to relate to something similar that's going on (if we're driving, she'll often repeat a bit from Finding Nemo about "Your exit's coming up, dude! I don't see it!" etc. She has an excellent memory and repeats them word for word (even if her pronunciation isn't great).
Typical kids can do this, too, but I think it's usually in different ways. My DD1 is not pretending to be a character, being imaginative with/exploring the language or figuring out how to use a particular phrase in different contexts -- which would all be typical. She is using a script because she struggles with spontaneous speech.
But if you've seen a specialist and your pedi and they have concerns, please don't ignore them. This is a red flag for autism spectrum disorders.

DD is 3.5 years old -- she repeats lines from movies/tv.
DD watches about 30 min of tv a day, she goes to daycare, and has a lot of social interaction. I feel she is being creative. She does this when playing with her babies for the most part.
