Swimming Lessons?

Is there anywhere besides the Y and one of those expensive swim schools I could sign DD up for swim lessons?  I have heard that there are community Ed places that I could go but I have no idea where to look.  I live in the St. Paul/Maplewood/N. St. Paul area.

Re: Swimming Lessons?

  • I have been told per lesson foss swim school is about the same price as other places. We hope to get Aiden signed up soon.
  • I think community ed takes a summer break, but check out your local area park and rec.

I am not sure why you are opposed to the Y, but you do not have to belong to take swim lessons.  They just charge you a little more.

  • Foss is way more expensive than community ed, fwiw. I have a friend that used to teach swimming and manage a pool and said that if you are considering spending that kind of $$ for Foss you are better off getting a 1 on 1 lesson through community ed. We did lessons last summer for our LO and she LOVED it! We ending up going to a neighboring community because they had better hours so I would suggest looking around your area. As for a specific rec. I am no help!

If you have a public school near you check them out to see if they have lessons. Community Ed usually offers them to. I am on the opposite side of town than you but I would think your CE has an online site you could find out class times/date/cost for.  I know Lifetime Fitness also does swim lessons and you may be able to do them without being a member. I think the Y is cheaper though - I vaguely remember a friend saying something about that because she is a Lifetime member and her kids take lessons at the Y.

Foss is well worth the money to me. The first class we did was through community ed and there were way to many people in it and very little time for the instructor to make sure everyone was doing what they were supposed to.

  • I am not opposed to the Y but the lessons are a bit spendy there and at Foss.  I think I will see if I can find a school near here with a pool that might do it.
  • I did a lot of research into swimming lessons last year when DS was seven months (the schedules didn't work out for us, but I'm going to try again this summer.)

Try Maplewood Community Center:https://www.ci.maplewood.mn.us/index.aspx?nid=119 They have parent and child classes 8 classes for $68. I have girlfriends that have taken their little ones there and really enjoyed it.

Also St Paul Community Ed has classes year round and some of the classes are outside in the summer. https://commed.spps.org/aquatics.html

  • I will look into that.  I looked at there sight but for some reason I was thinking it was more expensive.  Thanks!  Hopefully I can get H to do it because I really don't want to have to get into a swimsuit.  hahaha  I will of course for DD because I think it would be a lot of fun.
  • We currently go to Foss and love it. I used to teach at the YMCA and while they have a decent program, I feel like the Foss approach really sets kids up for success.

  • We did ours through the local community ed which is connected to the school districts. The price was very reasonable and we loved it. Ours does it 4 times a years and does do them during the summer, one session each season.

  • Foss is worth every penny you pay.  We have tried the JCC in SLP(pool was not warm and my kids had a really, really hard time getting in) and also tried the Y in New Hope and it was horrible - we took my DD out after the 2nd or 3rd lesson.  Everyone I know - and I know a lot of people - who have used Foss have raved about it.  I know a lot of people who tried the Y and most had nothing positive to say.  I know its a lot of money but learning to swim is a safety thing and IMO very well worth the month spent.  My older DD has been going for 2 years and can swim - we will keep her in for at least another year just so she gets to be stronger but if she asked to stop, I would be comfy doing so at this point.  My LO is in her 1st session now and totally loves it.
