Cloth Diapering

Packing diapers for the maternity center

I'm packing...or trying to pack the baby's diaper bag tonight. There is so much going on the next few weeks that I don't want to put it off any longer.

My question is how many cloth diapers should I pack? I will be delivering at a maternity center where I will be sent home 6-12 hours after delivery, depending on time of birth (if I deliver at 9pm they won't send me home at 3am of course, lol!) So I'm packing as though we will be staying 12 hours over night, just in case, how many diapers should I pack? I really don't want to have to use disposables, the more I think about it the more the idea of putting chemicals and plastic/paper on my newborns bottom makes me shudder. I was planning on sposies until baby's poop became normal, but now I'm planning on using fleece inserts until all the maconium is gone (about 4 days with my son, if I remember right) and the poop has become normal breast baby poop.

Has anyone clothed diaper from the get go? Especially if you didn't deliver at home?

Re: Packing diapers for the maternity center

  • Will anyone be coming to visit you?  Can you just pack enough for a few hours and have a 2nd bag for them to bring if required?

DS born 8/2010 - preliminary stages of SN int'l adoption - fur mama to 2 shelter dogs;  cloth diapering, babywearing, EBFing mama

  • My parents are the only ones coming to the maternity center with us, and they will be coming as soon as I start pushing so my DS will be there as soon after baby is born as possible. Plus we live an hour away from the maternity center and I'm nervous about packing too few and having to resort to disposables. I can't remember how many diapers DS went through his first 12 hours. I know it wasn't many, but I'm still nervous about packing too few.

I'm thinking a newborn shouldn't need more the 6 during the first 12 hours, is this a good number?

  • Thank you, Irachelle80, I was beginning to lean in that direction.

  • I'd bring at least 12. Honestly, I'd bring as many as you have that would make you be comfortable that you have enough, then leave half of them in the car so they're not taking up space!

Good idea! I will probably pack a second bag with extra diapers just in case and keep 8 in the diaper bag to take into the center with me. Thanks for the suggestions ladies.

Irachelle80 - you can always ask if your mom is willing to help with them...I know a few hospitals us CD's as well, you could find out if your's offers CDing during your stay. I understand your sadness though. I didn't think I would be able to CD the first few days either as hubby refuses to wash CD's.

But I'm determined to, even though our laundry mat is up two flights of steps. Either my mom will do the washing or I'll have hubby carry the diapers up and I'll go up and wash them. I won't put sposies on baby unless delivery is really rough and I just can't make it...but even in that case I think my mom would be willing to do the washing for me for a few days.
