On Wednesday, DH and I had quite the day. I had made an appointment for a second opinion consult with another RE in our area that has much better IVF success rates than our current RE. It was supposed to be at the end of April, but they had a cancellation and were able to get us in Wednesday.
Basically he went over our (mostly my) medical history. He said that he finds my case interesting because normally PCOS and DOR don't go together. He also said that even though my FSH is high, it might not be a bad thing. He gave us the example that many women who have endometriosis, once they have surgery to remove it, their FSH goes higher but their overall prognosis is better. So even though my FSH is high, he cannot tell right now if that makes my prognosis better or worse. He also told us that he would recommend IVF rather than continuing IUI (even though he would do IUI if we want). Basically he said that if we were just fighting one battle, like just PCOS he would recommend more low tech, but we are battling PCOS, DOR, and possible male factor so he would recommend IVF. In order to determine exactly where we are though, he has me redoing all my bloodwork, I have an ultrasound today for AFC and to just get a general look at what we are working with my one remaining ovary, and another SA for DH. He also told us that the early that we could do IVF is July which is fine since my insurance doesn't kick in until June 1.
The last thing he told me specifically, but also DH was that we need to lose weight. In the last two years I have gained about 60 pounds. I weigh 200 lbs and am 5'5". He said that he would suggest losing weight now so that I am in better shape for IVF and for when I do get pregnant. I have wanted to get back down to about 140-150. He also gave me the cards of two places that have had great success with their weight loss programs. It costs though so we'll see. The programs are doctor administered so I wonder if I could use FSA funds for it? Well in any event, I need to start eating better and excercising more regardless.
Then, we went to DH's urologist. I was kind of disappointed since we got no real answers there. The doc wanted DH to get more blood work before he prescribed anything for his low testosterone. His next appointment is in 6 weeks so hopefully by then we will get some answers. I am seriously thinking about putting DH on my insurance so we can go to another urologist because I don't particularly like the HMO doc.
So basically it's more waiting and then deciding. But hopefully a happy ending waiting for us soon.
Re: Went to Urologist and got 2nd opinion from RE (long)
It sounds like you are getting some great info from your RE- which is always a good start. Weight loss is always a good step- even if it doesn't help the IF, you'll feel so much better in general! I've been working for a few months and have lost about 13lbs on my own, but I'm just going slow and steady and trying to be healthy. I've dropped all fast food- I'm trying to cut soda and caffeine- although I do have an occasional diet coke- it's my addiction *sigh*.
I hope your H's appointment goes well and that you get things figured out soon. GL!
This exactly...good luck, sweetie!
