Anyone paint a crib

Please tell me what you did.

We are having twins and will be receiving a crib from a family member  ( HAND-ME-DOWN) so we only have to buy one crib .. The crib we are getting is Antique white and its been a PIA  trying to find a antique white crib that is affordable.   So, I need to paint it if possible??

Thanks

J

Re: Anyone paint a crib

  • I'm not exactly sure. It concerns me because when LO is teething, he/she will chew on the rails of the cribs, and possibly chip the paint...

  • I would think it would be possible.  I haven't refinished a crib, but I have refinished a lot of furniture in our house.  I am currently doing #2's dresser.  It is an oak finish now and I am repainting it sage green.

You'll probably have to sand it down a bit to allow the paint to stick better.  I just used a sand block and did it by hand.  Make sure you clean this off and let it dry fully before painting.  I used a primer for the dresser because it was a dark oak.  I used Kills brand.  Use a paint that is non-toxic and "green", since your LO could chew on it.  I would just get a "teething guard" for the crib to prevent any potential paint chipping.  Maybe something like this? https://www.amazon.com/Leachco-Easy-Teether-Cover-White/dp/B000H3FRA8/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1302891062&sr=8-10

I'm far from an expert though, and have just had great success refinishing some furniture.  Good luck!

...and how do you think your crib is finished to begin with? Manufacturer-applied paint, stain, varnish, poly, etc.? It's the same thing. At least if you refinish it yourself you'll know what's in it.

Awesome ... I was certainly thinking of a teething guard no matter whos paint or where we get the crib from !!!

When you painted  the dresser did you seal it with varnish or something ? or just used the paint and no top coat per se?

  • Personally I wouldn't because that's a lot of work ;)

I would just take care to rough up every inch of that crib.  I would consider investing in a dremel to get in all the nook and crannies.  Your paint WILL peel if you don't.  I would just look for low or no VOC paint.

I didn't use any sealant or varnish afterwards, though I'm sure it would work great.  Good idea!  It really isn't a hard project at all, and kind of fun if you like DIY stuff.  Good luck!

  • I just redid a dresser with Rustoleum Cabinet Transformations and it made it really easy and pretty idiot-proof. Big Smile You wouldn't necessarily have to use the kit. The first step is cleaning, then scrubbing with a deglosser in lieu of sanding (NOT a stripper), applying a bond coat which would be your paint, then finishing with a water-based polyurethane. I personally would not have left my dresser without the poly. It made it much more finished and protects the paint. It also gave it a nice shine and slicker surface. So personally if I were refinishing a crib I would use those same steps.
