My sister just asked me what kinds of food I want and I have no idea. I just wanna open presents and play games and havent even thought about food. Any suggestions?
i think it depends on what time your shower is and where it is. If its runs through the lunch hour then you would want to make sure to serve lunch to your guests. If its at a resturant or a hall I would think you would want to go with something catered and get things like salad, pasta, sandwiches, things like that. If its at a house you can go more low key and have like finger sandwiches or BBQ, or whatever. If its later in the day you could just have like appetizers and finger food.
One of mine was on a Sunday at 2. By then we figured everyone had eaten lunch so we just had cake and punch, fruit/dip, and bowls of nuts and mints and it seemed just fine. It was pretty traditional as far as showers go.
My friends are holding another one on a Fri night. We're having heavy appetizers and dessert with a little more casual/fun atmosphere.
Martha Stewart has some good ideas, some of them are a little fancier. For most showers I think any of your typical shower appetizer type foods should be ok: veggie/fruit or cheese trays, different kinds of dips with chips or bread, cold cuts/cheese, bruschetta, cookies, cake balls, cupcakes, punch.... i could go on and on. i love food.
For my sister's shower at 2 pm on a Saturday afternoon in the middle of July we are having all cold foods. Pasta salad, fruit salad, potato salad, deli tray with assorted rolls to make small sandwiches, chips/dip and also her cake.

For my shower, we had lunch. We had egg salad sandwiches on crossaints, wedding soup, and spinach salads. For appetizers there were sweet cocktail meatballs/weenies, veggies, spinach dip w/pumpernickle bread and crackers w/cheese spread.
Thanks for giving me a trip down memory lane! Haha!
Ours was at brunch-time in the dead of winter in Ohio. We had a beautiful salad bar and chili. It was sooooooooooo good. Also beverages and beer and wine
I hosted a shower that was from 11 - 1. I made a big salad bar (grilled steak & chicken, mixed greens, veggies, dried fruit, nuts, croutons, multiple dressings, pitas if people wanted to make one), cottage cheese, relish tray, breads, cheese ball and crackers and fruit cups w/ fruit dip. I served punch, soda, tea, and bottled water.

My family shower: it was at 2 and they had cupcakes and other snacky (nuts, chex mix) food along with punch and coffee.
Work shower: it was at 12. She had make your own sandwhiches, three types of salads, chips and a beautiful cake.
Friend shower: it will be at 12. My sister will be serving a sandwhich loaf, asparagas wraped in procuitto, dates filled with goat chese and nuts along with a cupcakes.
MIL shower (dh's family): Ugh, I cringe at typing this, but she is making it a pot luck.
Time of day, location of shower, all that stuff can play a part in deciding your list of shower foods. But, really, it comes down to what you want and what you picture. My shower is after lunch at about 2:00 so ideally, everyone should have already eaten lunch. But at the same time, I'm not a cake, nuts, and punch kinda girl. I've never liked cake...so I'm going with a cookie cake from Great American Cookie Co. I don't care for punch so lemonade and various soft drinks will do. And as far as food, my friends are spoiling me with buffalo chicken dip (OMG it's amazing), reuben dip, mini pimento cheese and chicken salad sandwiches, fruit pizza, sausage balls, veggie tray, etc. I live in the South and regardless of the time of day, you have a party or a shower and people will come ready to eat! Good luck to you on deciding your menu...really, anything goes!
Mine will be at 12ish so we are doing a full lunch buffet at an Italian restaurant - pizza appetizer, baked chicked and potatoes, salad, pasta, eggplant, sausage and peppers and cake...I think I named everything
We are doing the rock-a-bye baby theme that I saw on here and we are doing diner style food in little red plastic baskets with wax paper in. We are doing hot dogs with a condiment bar, fries, a pickle on the side (like those old fashioned drive ins do) and a candy bar with old fashioned candy that people can take home as their party favor. also we are doing cokes in glass bottles with straws, and lemonade and sweet tea for people that don't want coke.
We had a lunch shower (ETA: all these showers were lunch showers) w/ BBQ brisket mini sandwiches, cole slaw/potato salad, regular salad, chips/salsa/guac, for apps we had veg & dip, pigs in blanket, mini SW eggrolls, 7 layer dip. Soda/water/wine was available for beverages and cake for dessert! The food was AWESOME!
ETA: I hosted another shower and we did cold cut sandwiches (turkey, ham, chix salad), broccoli salad, chips/ranch dip, regular salad. Mini quiche, salmon roll, cheese and crackers for apps, soda/water/wine for bev, and cake/mini eclairs/cream puffs for dessert. That's what MTB wanted.
I went to another shower (this was the SPRING of SHOWERS!) and Baja Fresh catered it: it was mini burritos/tacos (make your own), rice/beans, chips/salsa/guac/queso, veg & dip, soda/water for bev. Can't remember dessert, b/c I had to leave early (wasn't feeling so great that day) and didn't have any. Oh well.
Re: what kind of foods are you having or had at your shower?
What time of day is your shower?

We are going to have "make your own" sandwich stuff, chips, fruit and veggies tray, some juice and soft drinks. And my favorite...a cake!
