DS was put on Enfamil AR about a week and a half ago for horrible spitting up. Then last Friday he was put on Zantac twice a day for heart burn. Since he's been on the E-AR he's had one solid poop that totally freaked me and my husband out which we later found out was a sign of constipation. The night he had the solid turd he pooped around 3 more times in the same hour with each poop going back to normal.
Fast forward.....his spit up issue is really not getting any better. He usually takes a 4oz bottle, we burp him between ounces, he is incredibily difficult to burp, half the time he doesn't do it at all, sometimes a little spit up while we're trying to burp, then at the end it's like he spits up the entire bottle. We were on Similac Sensitive before this change and he was like the Exorcist. So I can tell just a slight bit of improvement but really not that much. With the Similac he spit up every time we burped him and it was a ton.
Fast forward again.....This past Tuesday my MIL watched him for us so DH and I could go to dinner and a movie. She said he had a few bowel movements but it seemed like he was really struggling and was constipated. He has NOT had a bowel movement since then. I fed him around 5pm tonight and he did not burp at all. He had just a tiny bit of spit up and unlike usual he has not spit up at all afterwards. He just had a wet diaper so I took him to change him. He had just a tiny little poo mark on the diaper but nothing to constitute a bowel movement at all. He was/is screaming and crying bloody murder. I let him lay on the changing table for several minutes and wiggle around, grunt, groan, do what he needed to in the hopes that he would have a bowel movement. Nothing. Right now he is sitting in his swing absolutely screeching. His doctor said something about diluting the formula with water but if you do that wouldn't it just be better to go back to the Similac?
Has anyone had this problem with their LO and what did you do to remedy it? DH is going to put a call into the on call doc when he comes home for lunch.......after he tries to stimulate him with a rectal thermometer (that sometimes works). Please help. All this screaming and crying is leaving me with no nerves.
TIA
Re: Enfamil AR Moms...please help
Lena has been on the AR since she was a month old and started Zantac 2 weeks ago. Our pedi suggested mixing it with regular Enfamil half reg. and half AR for awhile then switch to a 2:1 ratio for a bit before doing all AR. We have had a couple rough days with constipation, but our Pedi suggested giving her 2oz of apple juice a day to keep things moving and we've been doing that since she turned 2 months.
We're in the same boat with her still spitting up an insane amount, but it's a slightly less insane amount than with non AR formula. Every once in a great while, she doesn't spit up any of a bottle, but more often she is drenching herself, us, and anything within a 3 foot radius.
Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh my lord!!! DH came home for lunch and did the stimulation with the thermometer. Um.........he definitely broke the seal. It was like this huge snake just coming out of him........and kept coming.........and coming. I've never seen so much poop from anything or anybody before. Once he finally stopped we thought he was good. 10 minutes later he was crying, checked the diaper and he had the biggest poop I've seen yet.
I need a clothespin for my nose.
Peyton started enfamil AR at one month, we survived it for a year, you can too! lol she still spit up a good bit, but not projectile. We did the thermometer, or q-tip when she had to go. We've had to do this for Morgan too. Load up a q-tip with vaseline and just put the tip in/twirl it around. We started her on pear juice (pedi's juice choice for little one) We bought the gerber 4-pack 2oz and she had 1oz in the am and 1 oz in the pm. Once she was on that schedule, she pooped fine. Plus when she started solids, we made sure she ate things like pears, etc & we were able to quit the juice.
