Hesitant to compromise...

I think we have decided on a name. Madelyn Quinn.

DH and I both agree on the FN and MN, but we DO NOT agree on spelling. DH likes it spelled Madilyn, which looks all kinds of wrong to me. I prefer pretty much any other spelling, but I like Madelyn or Madeline best. He says he likes this spelling because it would be easy to shorten to Madi if she wanted to later go by that. He also says that since this was my top name choice, he should at least get to pick the spelling. I just don't know if I can handle the incorrect spelling!

Thoughts?

  • I would be hesitant to compromise, too. Madelyn is just as easily shortened to Madi. Misspelling a name for "ease of nickname spelling" never makes sense to me.

  • Show him this thread.  Madilyn is misspelled and looks ridiculous.  I don't understand his argument at all.  There are tons of Madelines/Madelyns out there who go by the nn Maddy/Maddie (or however else it's spelled).

I'd sooner choose a new name than give my child a name that is spelled incorrectly.  You can spell the nickname any way that you want, regardless of how the first name is actually spelled.  IMO, that's a pretty dumb argument to messing with your child's name.

  • I highly recommend spelling it Madeline or one of the legit spellings. Who knows what she'll want for a nickname later or how she'll want to spell it. She may hate "Madi."
  • Madelyn is already Americanized enough, but Madilyn is just a hot phonetic mess. There are already Madeleines and Madelines running around, and Madelyn, while taking the guesswork out of pronunciation, is still a bit of a stretch for me. Please don't compromise...or if really wants that I, go with Madeline. :)

  • I don't understand why her nickname has to be Madi.  Is it supposed to be pronounced MAYdee or MADDee?  And most Madelines/Madeilines/Madelyns go by Maddy or Maddie, and those aren't the first five or six letters of the name the way they spell it, so why she has to have some completely bizarre spelling of Madeline just so her nickname can be Madi, however it's pronounced, is beyond me.

  • Thanks, ladies. I showed all of this to DH and he's coming around. He usually hates names that aren't spelled correctly, so I was surprised that he chose this one in the first place. Once he saw that everyone deemed it misspelled he said "well, I hate it when other people misspell their child's name, so I guess I shouldn't do it to my own".

I believe we will go with Madelyn, mostly for ease of pronunciation. Takes the confusion out of the MadeLYNN or MadeLINE thing. (I know most are against the -lyn trend, but in this case I think it works)

    Thanks for your help!
