does eating tomatoes (LO) look like blood in poop the next day?

i haven't noticed it before, but i think ds ate more tomato sauce than usual last night. his poop looked like it had blood in it this morning. not like tomatoes, not like discolored from food. it was throughout the stool, which was light colored (which is weird for him, too).

off to look up what causes that, just in case.

thanks.

  • DD's has been like that before.  I thought the same thing.  DD was fine.  I'm sure your LO is too.

  • My son had blood in his poop around 7 weeks old. It was pretty apparent that it was blood, but then again he was exclusively breastfed at the time. Since that time, and since the introduction of solids I freaked out a few times that there was blood, only to realize that he had eaten something red in color the day before.

From my experience, and research, blood in the stool is usually caused by an allergy to something eaten. If your son has not had any new foods, and is acting completely normal I would venture to say that it may just be from the red of the tomato sauce. If you notice it again maybe a call to the pedi is warranted. :) Good luck and I hope everything is ok!

  • Typically blood actually in his stool will make the poop look black and tarry looking. I would guess it is from the tomatoes and as long as it goes away today I'd say your safe.
