Anyone change OB's this late in Pregnancy?

After touring the only hospital my OB's office delivers at last night I can say I do not want to deliver there! It was way too modern and business like. We toured a birthing inn the night before and loved the feeling of the whole place, it is connected to a hospital. The staff were all really nice and personable.

In order to deliver at the birthing inn I would have to change OB's because my office does not deliver there. Has anyone changed OB's at 27 weeks? Do they even allow you to? I'm not that attached to any of the OB's at my current practice. I've had the same GYN for the past 10 years but I have a 1 in 5 chance of her delivering my kid. Should I call my insurance 1st? My OB's office hasn't been charging me anything, not even co-pays because its all part of 1 bill they send to the insurance company after I deliver.

  • I changed from my OB to a midwife around 18 wks.  If you're not having any complications I don't see why it would hurt anything.

  • If you're not comfortable with where you'll be delivering I would definitely switch. People do it all the time and it's not that big of a deal.
  • I would def. change! Not too late at all -- your old practice will just send over your records. Just check to make sure your insurance covers the new doc/birthing inn.

  • I changed from an OB to a midwife at 21 weeks and it was no big deal.  It was b/c I moved & also wanted to deliver at a different hospital.  No one cared.  I did notify my insurance company & made sure to sign a release of medical records from my OB's office & ultrasound reports to the new midwife group & ultrasound group.  Make sure you do it a few weeks in advance before your 1st appointment.

  • I just changed because of a move. Saw her this past Monday actually. It was no big deal at all. Like PP said, just make sure your insurance will cover the inn and the OB/CNM. Good luck!

  • I am probably going to HAVE to change even though i love my OB.  My insurance covers him but it doesnt cover his affiliated hospital which i just found out a couple months ago.  He told me to wait a little while but i cant wait any longer bc if im going to have to switch then i need to be doing so!  Sad part is that i already have half of what i owe to my doc for my delivery payed off :(.  But i would rather switch than have to pay double the hospital bill.

  • check with your insurance first, but I switched at 30 weeks, and my friend switched at 35 weeks.  so if you would be happier somewhere else, I would go for it.

  • I am getting a new OB at 34 weeks. That is a little late in the game but the earliest we can move. Just make sure you fax your records over before you want an appointment, the new OB I want won't schedule an appointment until they have my chart to decide if they want me as a patient.

  • If my Drs office doesnt change its induction policy by 32 weeks Im seriously going to consider switching.
