Help! She's sick and won't eat!

For the past 2 days, DD hasn't eaten her breakfast well. She's had what we thought were allergies and the pedi suggested maybe she was congested as to why she wouldn't eat breakfast. She usually made up for it by her next snack time. Today, she has a fever (among other things) and she won't eat. I usually give her 3 mini pancakes and some yogurt for breakfast. Today, she ate maybe 1/2 of 1 pancake. I just tried giving her her snack and she wants none of it. What can/do I do??

  • Offer her fluids and things you know she likes to eat.  Don't worry about it too much if she doesn't want much.  She isn't going to starve in a couple of days and she'll make up for it later.  You probably don't feel like eating when you are feeling crappy and she doesn't either.

  • I've offered her both milk and water today and she'll take about one sip of either and then push it away. She's still BF. Should I try to nurse her more to make up for the lack of food and to prevent dehydration

  • Ditto smb--DD's appetite always plummets when she's sick. Just push fluids to keep her hydrated (anything she'll take--water, milk, juice, popsicles, pedialyte, gatorade, etc.) and keep offering her foods you think she might like. She probably won't eat much but her appetite will return once she's feeling better.
    Dear Bump: You suck.

  • Milk and milk products can make phlegm thicker, so maybe that's her issue with the milk and yogurt. I still can't drink milk because I had horrible allergies as a child and remember that thickness feeling it the back of my throat. I know its gross, but its true. If she's congested, I'd suggest more clear liquids that will help the mucus get thinner.

  • Juice (you can water it down) may entice her to drink since it's sweet.

You could also try jello--lots of liquid, goes down easily (in case her throat is sore), and is sweet and tasty.

Our pedi told us this exactly a couple of days ago. Throw out the normal rules of what to feed her and jsut make sure she is getting enough fluids.

  • my mom friend told me to keep those yogurt sticks in the freezer. (normally in the fridge). they work well when she is sick. if you are worried about phlem, then go for the frozen juice popsicles.

good luck! sick is so hard on you too :)  hope she feels better soon.
