help me pick a paint color

DH & I are going to have our kitchen and bathrooms (master & guest) repainted in the next couple months and we are at an impass with what colors to use.  We are hoping to sell our house in the next 6-ish months so we need to keep them relatively neutral to appeal to the masses.

All of our bedrooms are currently painted a light green color similar to this one (this is not my house):

And all the common areas are currently painted a beige color similar to this one (again...not my house):

Should we pick one of the two colors we already have used in the house for the kitchen & bathrooms (I'm thinking we should just use the beige) or pick a new complimentary color?

(If it matters....we have a pretty neutral-ish beige tile in the kitchen & bathrooms, too.  We are considering upgrading to hardwoods but have to pull our neighborhood comps first to see if it would be a worthy expense.)

Re: help me pick a paint color

  • If you are defiantly selling your house then I would stick with a neutral beige.

For re-sale, I'd stick with a neutral color. You could use a shade for the bathroom that is technically in the "white" family but has a hint of green to it to flow with the bedrooms. I'd keep the kitchen in the same color family as the other common areas.
  • i'd do the kitchen in the same beige as the connecting common rooms and i'd do the bathrooms in a tone of the green- maybe two shades darker or lighter than the existing green or a tone more gray?
  • Agreed that I'd keep everything as neutral as possible.  Are you talking about replacing your carpeted areas with hardwood?

  • ditto the others about keeping it neutral.  another option would be to go a shade or two darker with the beige you have, I think that would look nice.

  • When we sold out home, we have to beige everything (last summer the buzz color was killian beige or something like that.

our bedroom and bathroom was left the sage green we had.

We're thinking about putting hardwoods everywhere except the bedrooms. It would be $$ since it is so much of the house but we're willing to do it if it helps sell the house. We've got to look at comps though and see what everyone else around us is doing.

  • For the kitchen and bathrooms, I'd go with a beige that matches your current beige. I think beige is more neutral than light green, and you will appear to the largest array of buyers with the beige color.

Not that you were asking for opinions on this, but I just wanted to say that I'd leave the tile in the kitchen and bathrooms since you don't really want to get hardwood wet.  This is the main reason the boys still eat their meals in the kitchen.  Because I can mop those floors.  :)

  • I agree with sticking with the beige theme for both.  You can do different shades, maybe go a little darker in the kitchen.

I will second not putting hardwood in the kitchen - inevitably, water will get on the wood whether you like it or not.

Good call.  We're likely going to have to replace the floors anyways (unless a professional steam cleaning works a miracle) so we'll look into keeping tile in the kitchen/bathrooms.
