Tampons

What do you do to dispose of your tampons?

DH told me I am not permitted to flush them becuase it will clog up our drains. I find this very disturbing, I have flushed them since I can remember. I'm freaking 29 years old and I never knew this? Really?

Re: Tampons

  • I flush them...theres no way I'm going to wrap them up..yuck! I've always flushed them too, we've had no problems ever!

    This. Always have!

  • Cassie - I can't believe you even remember what a tampon is

Thanks ladies. I'm sticking to flushing and I'll just lie about it. He'll never know!

  • We are sewer. I am flushing.

Maybe he needs an education on tampons and the difference between the actual tampon and the applicator. I don't flush the applicator.

I think {read hope} this is just some form of miscommunication.

I'll give him his lesson on them tonight.

Cassie - I missed that post.

  • We actually had to have our drains at my work cleaned out because people were flushing them. If a commercial system can't handle it I would be worried about your home. I have never flushed them. There are even signs in some businesses asking you not to flush them. I can't imagine DH being happy with me if he had to fix that clog.

  • if you have older pipes it's prob not a good idea to flush them. we lived in an older house and once the pipes were clogged so the landlord had them come out to fix it and when i came home from work there was a mini mountain of tampons on my front lawn. fanfvckingtastic!

My Mom has a well and septic system and they can't flush them at her house either. We wrap them in the wrapper from the new one and a ton of TP and put them in the trashcan which she changes every night. I only have one sister still living at home so it's not as much of an issue but when there was 5 of us...oh boy. My house is on city water so we flush away and haven't had any issues.

My parents used to have a septic tank and they had to have the entire thing replaced partially because my mom and sisters flushed them. I always flush the used tampon and wrap the applicator and throw it away.

  • It really depends on your house and what type of sewer system you have. Our house is old and we had major plumbing issues when I used to flush. They may say that they are "flushable" but that is not true always. I wrap mine in toilet paper and throw them in the trash. If it has the potential to cause pipe damage, then I would not flush them...we had to pay a lot to get them cleaned out.

  • Yes, the box says you can flush them, but any plumber will tell you not to. They do clog, even with city sewer pipes. Supposedly they expand and get HUGE, and then they can 'hang up' in certain places and cause clogs.

  • So, this is why I wonder who the heck flushes tampons still everytime that I walk into a public bathroom of sorts and find signs screaming at me not to flush my tampon? Has no one ran into that?

  • Growing up, we had septic, and I was told to never flush them. I guess I just got in the habit then of always wrapping them in lots of tp. I still do to this day.
  • I actually find it amazing that the posters who find it gross to wrap a tampon can change a poopy diaper.

Exactly. Our pipes are old, so it would not be pretty if I flushed them. I just wrap them up and throw them away. I have to throw them in the tall trash can now. The dog got into the bathroom trash can one too many times.

There is always the option of a diva cup, depending on your comfort level with it.  Some women love them and some are skeeved by it.

    Best option ever!

But if you're too grossed out by your own body to handle throwing away a tampon, the Diva Cup isn't for you.

    lol! But yay Diva Cup!

And before Diva Cup, always, always the trash. Plumbers are expensive. I hope you don't go to other people's houses and flush.

  • I have no other choice but to wrap them and put them in the trash. Before we bought our house we rented a little house, we hadn't been living there but a few months and the toliet got clogged. Our landlord sent someone and he came and told me he pulled tampons out and that is what made it clog. It was embarrassing to say the least. Then about an hour later our landlord called me and yelled at me and wanted to know how did I not know I couldn't flush them. But before we moved when I still lived at home I flushed them...and if I'm not at home I do too.
  • I've never flushed one and I don't intend to. Not worth the risk IMO.

Its no more gross to wrap up than the applicator. I just pre-prep the toilet paper and I never have to touch it.
