Rings not fitting after pregnancy

My hands and feet got really swollen very early on in my pregnancy because I was anemic before I got pregnant.  9I didn't know this until my first set of blood work.)

My hands and feet tingling and going numb was actually my first pregnancy symptom.  I had to take my rings off as soon as I got back from our cruise. I was about 7 weeks pregnant. I have NEVER been able to fit them back on.

Currently I am wearing a ring size 2 sizes larger than my engagement and wedding rings.  My wedding band is an eternity band, so I don't even have an option to size it.

I have been really upset lately, becuase I think this change to my hands may be permenant and it makes me sad to think I may never get to wear my wedding band again.  Sad

  • aw man, that is a bummer - especially about your eternity band.  I had to take mine off around 8 weeks too.  I retained a LOT of water. I am able to wear them again, but I will say, they are a little tighter than before.

Can you take the eternity band back to the jeweler and see what they can do for you?  Maybe swap it for a larger size?  Or make it into one of those half-eternity bands?  I have to say, I really loved those when we got married.  I wanted one so bad, but my jeweler (and my husband) talked me out of it for exactly this reason.  Or told me to get one really large in case this happens.

I know it's sentimental to you, but for practical purposes, you could always try to sell it and then buy a larger size?

  • Have you tried the rings recently?  I put on my rings 6 months pp and they still didn't fit.  Around 8 months pp, I put them on and they fit.

Sorry you're going through this.  Maybe you can get a plain band to wear for now.

  • I hardly gained any weight when pregnant, I think I gained more after delivery.  My rings are incredibly tight and I hardly wear them because of it.  I could get them sized, but I'd like to lose just a few pounds and hopefully they'd fit better.  I know the summer is going to be dreadful with them, so I either need to get them resized or just not wear them which I hate.
  • I couldn't wear mine for about the last 2 months, so I went out and bought a fake one from kohls, I know I'm a nerd.

Maybe this can be an excuse for a vow renewal and a new band? Wink  you could always wear the old one around your neck, get a nice thicker chain?  Or like a PP said you could go to the jeweler and see what they can do, they might not be able to re-size, but maybe they could make you a new ring with the stones and metal, so it might not be the exact same ring, but all the original material would be there.  My band looks like an eternity ring from the top, but underneath it is just platinum, so it can be re-sized (my mom had the same issue with her rings after she had me, she had to have them re-sized, apparently her fingers and feet swelled and never went back to their original size).  I know it can be expensive, but having it re-made might be a good option?

  • It took a long time for me to get my rings back on and they were tight.  And then I lost about 20 lbs, so I was 25 lbs below what I had started at pre-pregnancy and my rings never got any looser.

I put my rings on today and thought that its not going to be long before I can't wear them.  Boo!!!

I went to Target last pregnancy and bought a fake e-ring and band.  I got the biggest fake diamond I could find, it was crazy.  But I didn't want anyone thinking I was pregnant and not married.

  • Oh that really stinks. I actually have the opposite problem. My rings are both too big. And that is mainly after I had my gallbladder removed in September. Oh I don't mind at all. Although I really do need to get them fixed, so I don't lose them.

  • I am having the same problem even though my rings fit all through pg when I came home from the hospital they didn't fit even though I couldn't visibly see any swelling in my hands.  I've been wearing a fake band in the meantime but was wondering how long I should wait.  Good to know most people go back to normal after some time.  I was sad as well.  If I still cannot wear them in a few months I may take them to get resized slightly,

  • Thanks for all the replies.

I have a plain silver ring that I wear when DH and I are going out.  I don't wear it daily because I am highly allergic to certain metals and it gives me a rash to waer anything except platinum, titanium or surgical steel.

Since my e-ring and wedding band are platinum it makes it more difficult to resize, and I had been putting it off hoping I would get back down to where I was pre-pregnancy.  But a year out I am still 2 full ring sizes aboive where I used to be.

I went to the jewlery store and inquired about having my stone re-set in a temporary setting to avoid reszing up then down my original ring.  But that turned out to cost way more than I was willing to spend.

DH mentioned getting me a mothers ring with DDs birth stone and wearing that until I get back down to my old size.  I like that in theory, but I am starting to feel like I am never going to get there.

Thanks for letting me grump about it!

  • I don't know where you are looking at having them re-sized/re-done, but if you are willing to travel a bit I have read/heard fabulous things about https://www.questjewelers.com/ in Fairfax. I know Rags had her ring done there and I have seen many examples of gorgeous custom platinum work they have done.  Since plat. has a much higher melting point than gold it is harder to find someone who does really good plat. work.

Although my e-ring still fits, it's a more snug that I would like it to be (also I wear it w/ my w-band and another band and I find that the more rings I have on a finger the snugger they feel)  - and I think my e-ring is set too high to wear it daily- so I am hoping to eventually have my setting re-done at Quest.

I always hate to "push" Quest since they're down in my neck of the woods and I hate to subject anyone to 495...but they really are worth checking out as to options for your band.  Their work is totally brilliant.  Huan worked really closely with me to design my ring set.  If anyone can figure out what to do with a platinum eternity band, it's him.  (It also doesn't hurt that he's easy on the eyes. ;)  I'm happy to pass along his contact info if you want to bend his ear a little by phone before driving down.

  • Ditto Qwest!!  That's where we got our custom rings too.  After 6 years, I can just pop in and they will clean/polish my rings on the spot.  I even lost my wedding band (just a plain platinum band) and they helped me out big time.  LOVE them.
